Toilet Flush Sign ... What do you have?

Toilet Flush Sign ... What do you have?

I've just spent 1.5 hours trying to snake the drain and having to pay /way/ too much for a plumber to clear the main drain line because a guest flushed a "funshable" or bably wipe ...

Now that it's done, I'm buying a power snake & putting up a sign, but I'm not sure what have the sign say.

Do you have a sign telling guests what is acceptable to flush? If so, what does it say?

I'm debating between something quirky like "Don't believe the hype ... there's no such thing as a flushable wipe!"

... or something funny like a sign with "Please Don't Flush", followed by a list of things including wipes, tampons, napkins, hopes & dreams, etc.

... or something a little bland, like "Dear Guests, Help us avoid plumbing backups. Please dispose of napkins, tampons, baby wipes, and any other wipe in the trash. Thank you."

Thoughts?

I just have a simple

"ONLY TOILET PAPER IN THE TOILET"

"Wipes, sanitary pads, Q-tips, paper towels, cotton pads etc. WILL CLOG THE TOILET"

posted in the bathroom where guests can't miss it 🙂

And I tell them with a smile that since it is a private bathroom used by the guest only, the guest will be held responsible and charged for any plumbing issues that occur during or immediately after their stay. (This is also covered in my house rules)

We have 50 year old pipes and a septic system so we are very clear on proper use of the pipes. We have the sign below in both our bathrooms and we spell it all out in detail in our house manual. I know people come from different cultures and have different life style experiences — not only around the world, but right here in the US. Many people have no idea what a septic system is or how it works. We figure learning about that, and the limits of our well, are part of the experience. What really does concern me is those guests who just don’t seem to care and are  casually or purposefully negligent so we simply remind them of their security deposit. We’ve had only lovely, responsible guests and have not had any problems, but we spend a lot of effort to avoid problems and more time than we’d like worrying about it!

Posted prominently in both our bathrooms:

YOU flush it...YOU fish it!

Save our septic system and your security deposit.

Please do NOT put ANYTHING in the toilet EXCEPT

your business and our toilet paper.

THANK YOU.

The problem is not only things that guests throw into the toilette. In my case was male guests who pee everywhere. It is so sad and not respectful.

I rent two RVs and their sewer system clogs very easily even if you use the wrong kind of TP.  I was having so many problems with clogs from guests throwing "flushable" wipes down the drain even though I would tell them at check in NOTHING down the toilet but the TP provided.

Finally I put up a sign that says "Please do not throw anything in the toilet other then the toilet paper provided.  This includes but not limited to, feminine hygiene products, flushable wipes, napkins, ect."

I have it placed on the wall right in front of the toilet.  When people sit, it's right in front of them.

I have yet to have a problem ever since I put up the sign.

There is a good German site that specialises in these toilet etiquette signs.

Here is a sample of what's available!

This one is pretty universal and covers most Male situations.........

And for the men who can't focus on more than one thing at a time......

I would not have thought this one needed explaining, but as hosts we do see strange things......

Just glad they did include a illustration for teeth in that one!!

But this one does have me a little perplexed..........

Hi Elizabeth,

in England it would be terribly rude to name any of the items were actually talking about, so my sign reads....

The Miller's Barn is on private drainage, please only flush toilet paper, for anything else please use the he bags provided and pop them in the bin,  thank you x

The main problem we have is guests pouring fat down the drains, which blocks them, I've yet to find a polite sign to deal with this!

@Tamsin7  Here's a little tip for keeping drains from clogging with oil and grease- if you flush used coffee grounds down the drain, it binds to the fat and moves it along. And because they're grainy, they sort of scour the drain as they move along. Of course if the drain is already fully plugged, it wouldn't help much, but if you do it on a regular basis it will keep them running free.

Perhaps you could also put a largish tin can next to the sink with a note: "Please pour all used grease, fats and oils in here so as not to clog the drain, thank you."

I have a small trash can next to the toilet so they don't have to walk across the room to the other bin near the sink.  Give them an easy alternative to flushing something and most will use it.....

I have a sign that says "Please do not put teabags, food, wipes or sanitary products in the toilet or sink.

Please use the bin provided."

This did not stop some guests from blocking the bathroom sink with noodles.

I then updated the house rules to say that if I need to call a plumber to unblock a sink or toilet due to a guest disposing of something incorrectly, the guest will be charged for the service. Of course you and I know that trying to actually enforce that would be difficult, given that CS typically takes guest's side. However, the threat of a charge has (so far) prevented any reoccurence.
