The purpose of the meeting is to hear the thoughts of hosts, neighbors, business owners and guests of Air BnB properties and other short-term rentals. In addition to providing public comment on community concerns, attendees will learn how other cities are balancing the opportunities and challenges of this industry and hear from the team working on the issue here in St. Louis.

Five alderpersons of St Louis City, MO will be holding a town hall meeting on Airbnb and vacation rentals.

Alderpersons are:

We need to identify all the cities where Airbnb hosts (like us) fought and won this fight, and see what we need to replicate. 

We also need to identify all the cities where Airbnb hosts fought and lost this fight, so that we can learn what mistakes should be avoided. 

We need to see if legal counsel or other advisers were used, and determine whether we as a group should join forces, say via a 'legal defence fund' or something, so that we can speak with a single voice. I suspect the hotel lobby is behind this bashing effort.

Thanks for the link Sonny.  One item they missed reporting is that Airbnb is in negotaitions with St Louis Convention & Visitors Commission as reported by president of CVS Kitty Katcliffe. 

I have poked around and found communites that ban short term rental, usually do it undercover and no one knows what happened until it is too late.  So it is incouraging the St Louis city effort is being reported in the news and our local NextDoor app.

Is anybody else attending the meeting at the Schlafly Branch of St. Louis Community Library tomorrow at 6:00pm? I will be there.

Hi Doug,

I attended the first town hall meeting. It was well attended.

The city wants to Regulate, License, Inspect, and Tax short term vacation rentals.

The traditional Bed and Breakfast keepers want them to be regulated by same rules applied to them.

The people opposed want them restricted by zoning laws and a special police task force assigned to deal with nuisance vacationers.

99% of the Airbnb owners were management companies running multiple units 5 – 300.

I think how ever this turns out, if you are an owner/occupant host and only have 1 property, you will be forced out of business. There is an online survey anyone can complete:

thanks @Doug4  for the interesting link of CBRE, they are tied in with Deloitte here in New Zealand, and are heavily involved with pushing Retirement Village complexes, without having factored into account ever changing Demographics including the fact those from places like China and India who travel abroad tend to look after their advancing years family members in their own home.

Indeed, when one looks at things with an open mind and awareness, those 2 races parents tend to travel abroad and leave their properties empty for lengthy periods whilst staying with family members.

It's an often overlooked aspect of what contributes to a so called shortage of Housing in our communities world-wide
