I bought some nice towels at Target - Nate Berkus project 62 - and they were fine until the hems started unravelling in the wash. After 8 months, two of 4 towels have done this. I returned one to Target for a replacement, and am getting ready to take the entire stack of towels, hand towels and washcloths back for full refund and buy something else.
There are a lot of choices and prices out there, and I'm wondering if any other hosts have a brand/supplier they have used and could recommend?
@Geoff22 Costco sells hospitality grade linens in multipacks, and I've found them to be excellent, and reasonably priced. Here in Canada they have them in store and online.
I've also ordered from a hospitality supplier. Again, good pricing and they're meant to be used and abused. We were able to set up a cash account. Ours is Canadian so I can't recommend a specific supplier, but there should be one in your area if you search online.
We have had the same towels since we started almost two years ago, and they regularly get washed hot, bleached, etc. and we have only lost them due to guests staining them: we haven't had any of them failing.
I find great deals at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods. I actually have three sets I rotate and after almost a year of regular washing all three sets are still holding up beautifully.
Another vote for Home Goods. I’m in my fourth year of hosting, and still using the same Calvin Klein towels (100% cotton) I bought there when I started. Though washing instructions indicate “no bleach,” a small amount hasn’t done any damage that I can see.
I also get most of the towels from Marshall's, Ralph Lauren, although they don't hold up particularly well, they make a nice impression and are fairly inexpensive. I have found the Ikea towels hold up really well, but aren't too fluffy or luxurious.
I like a thin towel, can fit many in the machine, dries easily, and has a nice feel (I really loathe fluffy towels as they ''skim'' the body). So I buy IKEA Frajen. Excellent value, lasts for years (esp if you buy white, I have a few others and they fade in the sun over the years, assuming you line dry).
This is my preferred towel for home as well.
I don't buy bathmats from IKEA, don't like any of them.
@Geoff22 I've gotten good quality towels from Walmart, and they weren't particularly expensive. Of course, I didn't buy their bottom of the line ones. They've held up fine, no unravelled hems.
LL Bean
Id like to think I could buy NEW towels but some of these guests are savages and will treat a $20 towel like a piece of toilet tissue or just simply walk off with it. With that in mind I just go to the local thrift stores and buy towels. I only use white linens so it makes finding them easy at the thrift stores. I live in a city of hotels so they donate their towels on a monthly basis and the quality, prices and discounts are amazing. Ive NEVER bought a new towel for my guests when used will do. Of course, these things are washed and bleaced before I buy them and the turnover in guests keep them clean. Once they are stained and reach the end of their life with me they are donated back to to the thrift store and I just buy more.
Good Luck.
Hi @Geoff22 I actually also got towels from target, but I chose the slightly higher end one - the brand is Fieldcrest. These have held up very nicely and I have had used them for hosting for almost 2 years. I have 2 sets I rotate through.
Have gotten them from most of the places mentioned above - Target, Walmart, Sam's and have only lost one towel to degradation in the past year.
Target - Field Crest
I wait until they go on sale for 30% off. It happens about once every couple of months.
P.S. I always buy BATH SHEETS. 'Towels' are too small for most Americans 😉
