Which monuments and sites are in your local area?

Culture always played a crucial role in the modern tourism industry and represents a significant attraction for tourists (both domestic and international), extending tourist stays and reducing seasonality.

Some are great; some are small – no matter the size, though, many are grand in their meaning to the locals' history.

From ancient monuments to medieval castles, industrial constructions or picturesque white villages, and everything in between, the world has many monuments and sites to offer and experience.

As April 18th marks the International Day of Monuments and Sites, I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to ask: What monuments are local to you and available nearby?

I am looking forward to reading your replies, and if you'd like to share photos of them, that's even better!

Thanks!

Nick

haha love it @Stephanie

@Stephanie I count 7 roundabouts rather than your six but I guess it is easy to miss the big green one in the middle!

@Helen427 No there were never flowers on the small roundabouts. In fact these are only painted roundabouts giving cars and lorries the ability to drive across them as needed. I don't think being environmentally friendly was ever an aim this 1960s (I think) design.

@Mike-And-Jane0 That does look quite scary 😂 especially for someone who hasn't attempted to drive in the UK yet (me).

For those who may be interested, if you use the keyword "Catacomb" in the archive Newspapers section of this website, or your own local archived papers, it pops up the stories on the Catacombs".

Sometimes to get a better historic Timeline of events as they occurred it's good to go in 10 year Time-frames dating back to the start of when the newspapers were documented.

In New Zealand archives they go back to around 1839 however have references to much year times in the world.
