"Air conditioning in Sevilla and your health
The Spanish Pneumology Society states that 20% of colds and half of sick leave due to colds are in the summer. Although not solely responsible, the temperature of the air conditioning is largely to blame.
The problems begin when a dry environment in Sevilla (below 25% relative humidity) is combined with a temperature difference of more than 7ºC (19°F) from that on the street. This is when your throat and your entire respiratory system begin to suffer.
A badly used air conditioner is more than enough to turn your home into a cold, dry place. Pharyngitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, otitis... the list of afflictions is long and it includes muscular problems (cramp) and migraines if the cold air is directed at a person's head or back.
Air conditioning ideal temperature in Sevilla:
You must know what the ideal temperature is, and control it. Both for your comfort and for your health.
In reality, it is not efficient to set the air conditioner below 25ºC (77°F).
Your comfort will not increase, and the consequences for your health will skyrocket.
The ideal recommended temperature is usually between 25ºC (77°F) and 26ºC (79 °F) in the summer months, so adjusting the air conditioning to these values is usually the most optimal and most efficient point.
FOR OUTDOORS SEVILLA TEMPERATURES OF 36C (100°F) or more
A Law via Royal Decree number 1826/2009 states that air temperatures in 'refrigerated indoor areas' (shops, restaurants, Hotel, tourists apartments)should not be below 26ºC (79 °F) when outdoors temperatures are more than 36C (100°F).
A key fact to know about your air conditioner is that it can only lower the temperature in your house by 7c (19°F). That’s its temperature differential.
If you lower the thermostat so it’s set more than 7C (19°F) lower than the current outside temperature, the AC won’t be able to reach its target temperature. Instead, it will run and run, wasting larger amounts of energy and wearing down, possibly leading to it overheating and shutting down.
So when it’s 36 c (100°F) or more outdoors, put the thermostat up to 27ºC (80°F)"
