Two weeks ago my unit was robbed and vandalized. For two weeks I have been warning Airbnb about the 'guest' who did this. I have been told that due to the pandemic response times are slow. The Toronto police have an open investigation. This is my review that for some reason does not show up on his profile. He is out there and able to book people's homes. The claim's department has still not addressed my claim. The safety department seems to think that a pandemic is an excuse for taking two weeks to address this. Unbelievable that his profile is still up. I have been a superhost since 2015, and have over 550 reviews 99.9 percent are 5 star. Airbnb is a disgrace.
Paul rented my place with a woman he said was his ‘wifey.’ I awoke to messages that he had left at 5am in the morning saying that he had to leave quickly, to get his ‘rommie’ out, and to hang onto his cooler.
Fifteen minutes later Paul buzzed me and together we went over to the unit. She opened the door for him. I stood in horror at what I saw. The locked closet doors had been ripped open, my locked dresser that belonged to my grandfather had been broken into, the locks on the drawers destroyed, my entire unit ransacked and my valuables packed in my own bags to steal.
A man I had not seen rose from my bed, and he and the woman fled. They stole all the money I had locked in my closet. They even stole my laundry money. They butted out cigarettes all over my unit, broke glasses, cut open my box spring, and left a crack pipe in the bathroom. Paul has threatened that ‘bad things will happen to me’ if I don’t drop the claim and the case. The police have an investigation underway. I have hosted over 600 guests. This is the first negative review I have ever left. Paul is a liar and he is dangerous.
@Lizzie @Nick @Liv Can you guys get Airbnb Trust and Safety to address this ASAP? It's very concerning that this criminal still has an active profile and can go on to book other places and continue his criminal activities.
That it has been 2 weeks since the host reported this and it hasn't been taken care of doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the safety of the platform.
Hi @Sarah977 thanks for the tag 😊
I'm actually already in contact with @Marie6360 as she posted earlier in the week - Marie is in touch with Support about this issue, and we're doing our best to help on our end.
@Marie6360 , wow, thats awful. So sorry to hear that and Airbnb being unresponsive in an emergency is really sad to hear as well. I feel like unattended bookings are becoming higher risk every day, the scammers and straight up criminals are looking for weaknesses in systems that they can game and Airbnb's Trust the guest no matter what ideals don't protect the host. One of the only problem bookings I ever had was from someone I found out with a simple online search had a criminal record for assault and breaking and entering. Luckily his guests and he decided not to push to hard on me when I throttled down their noise and partying the second time, if there had been a third time, they were going to be outa here!
@Marie6360 This is about as bad as it gets. No one is steering the @Airbnb ship. The captain and crew skedaddled on the only lifeboat and have left the passengers behind.
Honestly, this is absolutely disgraceful on AirBnB's behalf as well as this bum who caused all of this. I wish swift justice for this complete POS.
Thanks @Colleen253 and @Russell49 . @Katie I don't understand this at all. I just sent what I think is my 30th email to Airbnb saying the following:
"Paul's profile is still up. It has been up for two weeks since this happened. For two weeks hosts are seeing his 5 reviews and thinking he is safe. My review is not up. Please explain to me why Airbnb is requiring me to email over and over to get a response, and to wait two weeks to hear from the claim department in spite of having a 500 damage deposit? Honestly, every day this goes on seems more and more surreal."
Airbnb is putting hosts in danger and nobody over there seems to care.
@Marie6360 Exactly what date did Paul check out? If he has not written you a review then your review will not appear on his profile until 14 days past his check out date (which would be the end of the open review period.)
@Emilia42 Good point. Though the fact is, the account of a guest such as this should be removed entirely, and should have been done by now.
@Marie6360 Have you ever had a guest book your place and you go look at their profile to read the reviews. Then when you go back to look at the reservation it’s been cancelled by admin...I think that’s what happens when guests are being investigated by the trust and safety team. Their profile is still active but when they do go to book another place the reservation gets blocked and it comes up as,” cancelled by admin”. Maybe that is the case here, let’s hope anyway!
True story… I’ve had a handful of guests, book my place, and then literally an hour or two later it’s canceled by Admin
