An difficult situation. Need Advice.

Hi Host,

Airbnb's system processed a payout to me, which was supposed to cover the cancellation fees. The substantial amount of approximately ~$10,000 was paid solely by Airbnb, not by the guest.

Then, Airbnb support informed me that the guest needed to pay ~$11,500 to restore their account. This amount was significantly higher than what I had received from Airbnb.

I offered to simply return the payout to Airbnb and reduce the guest cancellation fees. It seemed like the most straightforward solution. However, Airbnb support initially told me I had to refund the guest directly, and then the guest would pay Airbnb. This raised a red flag for me. I was worried that if I refunded the guest, there would be no guarantee that Airbnb would receive their payment. If the guest didn't pay, would Airbnb come after me for the money? I couldn't afford that risk.

Has anyone else experienced a situation where they received a cancellation payout, but Airbnb required them to transfer the funds to the guest in order to resolve the guest's debt with Airbnb? What did you do? What steps can I take to ensure I am not held responsible if the guest does not pay Airbnb? How can I best protect myself financially in these kinds of disputes?

I would greatly appreciate any insights or suggestions.

I suggest that information be confirmed with Airbnb.

My understanding is that Airbnb has the payment processor similar to any payment processor does no authorize any payments outside of their legal business components.

It sounds odd to that Airbnb paid you for a Guest who didn't pay so that you could give the Guest that large sum so the Guest can return it to Airbnb?  Why wouldn't Airbnb just have you give then?  Makes no sense.

My question exactly.

The only logical explanation is that for Airbnb to collect its fee, instead of just reverting the payout, they have to charge the guest to get paid.
