Hello everyone 😊,
I hope you’re having a great week!
Helping your guests know what to pack can make a big difference in their stay. A few simple tips can prevent surprises, reduce stress, and let guests enjoy their trip to the fullest. Sharing your local knowledge—what’s useful or necessary—enhances their experience without overwhelming them.
Do you advise your guests on what to pack for their journey?
I’m looking forward to reading your thoughts!
Warm regards,
Elisa 🌻

Hi @Elisa - we do this:
- we allow 1 dog and we suggest that guests bringing a dog consider a head lamp as it's very dark here, with very minimal street lights and for winter time we suggest spikes for shoes to walk in the winter as it's icy from November - April.
Hi @Greystone0 😊,
It's nice hearing from you!
That's good to know. Do they ask often what to bring, or not really?
-----
Hi @Elisa - guests often ask about grocery stores. Oddly, we get guests who think there is not any local grocery stores and they think they need to try and bring/pack all the food. That isn't necessary at all, we have two fantastic, large, well supplied grocery stores that are only 2 miles away. A few guests let us know post trip that they were really pleased with the local shopping as they had just assumed otherwise.
One guest wanted a specific type of fish and a specific type of cheese and we both searched the local options and did not find what she wanted, so she packed those items.
Thanks for the discussions!
Hi @Greystone0 😊,
Thank you for letting me know!
That’s a funny story.
Do you remember which cheese and fish your guest was looking for?
-----
Erm, no. In fact, some of my guests could even be offended by it ("don't treat me like a child. You're not my mother").
Always better to stay out of personal recommendations except when explicitly asked for it.
Hi @Elaine701 😊,
Thank you for sharing your point of view here.
Have you ever asked your host for a suggestion while traveling?
-----
No they are adults I wouldn't dream of telling adults what they should pack @Elisa
Hi @Helen3 😊,
Thank you for your comment, I feel you.
Have any guests ever asked for suggestions about what to bring?
-----
Hi @Helen3 😊,
That’s amazing!
Congratulations on 10 years of hosting, well done!

I would love to advise guests from hotter climates to realise that when they book a holiday in Scotland, they need to bring clothes appropriate for a cooler climate, so that they don't just crank up the heating to ridiculous levels. But I don't, in the hope that they will be smart enough to figure this out for themselves. Sadly, they often don't and it's a surprise to them that our country is cooler than where they have come from. But rather than add another layer of clothng, or change into a warmer outfit, it's my heating that has to adjust, always upwards.
For me, extensive research on the country I am planning to visit is a large part of the enjoyable anticipation of the holiday. This seems not to be the case for many.
Hi @Fiona256 😊,
Thank you for participating here!
I have been in Scotland during the summer a few years ago, and I completely fell in love with Edinburgh and its surroundings.
Where do most of your guests come from?
-----
The majority of guests who come to my riverside flat in Invernes are American.
Those coming to my seashore cottage on the Isle of Skye come from many different countries, including the UK. Here, it seems to be the younger guests who never dress sensibly, preferring to sit around in shorts and teeshirts even in the winter. I occasionally glimpse them popping out to take photos, which is how I know what they are wearing or not wearing. More mature folk tell me they like cooler temperatures and clearly know how to dress for any climate.
Hi @Fiona256 😊,
Thank you for letting me know!
Do you use any particular strategy to attract guests from America?
That’s so great for you!

Sometimes I share with them good restaurants with cheap prices, snake good places to visit but I never advice them what to pack in their bags Dear Elisa
