Filming

Hi everyone

See msg below I received from a potential guest. What are your thoughts and has anyone ever gotten a request like this.

Hello,
My name is Andrea, and I am a Film student at the Savannah College of Art and Design here in Atlanta. I am the location manager for a Student Short thesis film. We are searching for a home to shoot one of our scenes at, and the look of your space matches the style and story of our film perfectly! Do you allow preliminary location visits? We would love to be able to visit the space and see it in person! We are happy to discuss more details as well as any guidelines or fees needed. Thank you for your consideration!
Best,
Andrea

I'd be flattered, and thank them, however I would not allow it.

This is not a guest stay, it is something else altogether.

Filming is disruptive in so many ways. Locations get high pay and a pile of contracts. The tech requirements are larger and thus are the hazards. The school would need to have a large comprehensive insurance policy, with you named as a beneficiary. The risks of damage and injury are real.

We've a link with the local location scouting person of the local film council, and are very hesitant to allow filming due to how complicated the whole process is. So far we've not allowed filming here, and we are in an area where lots of locations are, lots of productions happen, and we'd be a great location. Even with new tech, there's too much disruption, and it doesn't at all compare to the use of a guest stay.

Do let us all know what you decide.

If you are at all tempted, some solid legal advice might be a good idea.

Hello,

It wouldn’t hurt to meet with her and discuss these things. It could be that her film is very mild and that it might suit you to let them do it. Make a list of questions so you don’t forget to ask anything and meet with her in person. Legal advice is always a good idea before moving forward after your meeting though.

Best,

Stefanie

As you know it's against Airbnb's T&C to share contact information with guests before they book. And you'd have to block out a day and lose money so the property is available to show them around @Floscinco0

You need to be very careful if you let people film at your property it's a commercial booking and if there's damage Airbnb may not accept a claim.

if you want go ahead

1. I would not accept a pre visit. They can ask you via message any additional info they need

2. They need to share a copy of their liability insurance

3. you need to understand how many people will be using it and that they have appropriate permissions from your local government (need this in UK not sure about other countries

4 . they should be paying a commercial rate

5. you need a contract which covers whether they are moving furniture/hours of operation/how many people /what happens in the event of damage etc

Hi @Floscinco0

That is rather unusual indeed!

What do you think of Helen, Stephanie, and Kitty's advice on how to approach this query? I'd love to know what you decide to do in the end. 🙂

Thanks,

Emilie
