I think I solved this.
It seems some of my rooms during the coldest parts of the winter get too hot, then guests just want to be comfortable and open windows. The real fix is to balance the HVAC. But given none of the duct work is accessible, and big money, I went a different route.
So I took an easy to use home automation approach.
I installed Flair vents in each of the bedrooms with a puck to help regulate the temp. And so far it’s worked.
First, the cleaner will make sure all bedroom doors are closed during a turnover when the hose is vacent. This way the heat can be remotely turned off for bedrooms when the house is vacent saving on heating bills.
When a guest is due to arrive, Each flair vent is set to bring the bedroom temp to 65 and maintain.
So far, most guests leave the temp set there. Some make it warmer, but none have opened a window while the central heat is running.
In addition I added window sensors (and a label stating) for which of the window is opened, the vent closes and turns off the heat for that bedroom. The puck is set to inactive mode and the vent is closed. If the window is closed, the puck is activated again and starts maintaining the temp - They can cool it down, but heating the room back up would require closing the window.
So far no complaints (and only 5 stars), and lower heating bills.
