Host asking for passport id

Hi, it's my first time booking with airbnb. We are going to venice and the host has asked through WhatsApp for us to fill in a form with a photo of our passports. Is this usual? as I'm bit worried about giving a stranger a copy of my passport

It's a legal requirement to provide photo ID as a guest in Italy . @Dawn1150

Thanks for your reply.  I thought that might be the reason, so I've sent the form and photo of passport.
