I’m uncomfortable letting guests use my computer as it has my life’s work on it. How do I politely say no, without losing the book

A new guest wants to use my personal laptop. I’m not comfortable with this as my laptop is my work laptop and has my life‘s work on it. How do I say no in a polite manner without losing the booking?

"I'm sorry but you cannot access my personal computer. There is a public library located on such and such street." It is only difficult because you may be overthinking it. People don't typically share their computers with others and aren't expected to. Why would you lose the booking? Did this guest book with the stipulation that your laptop would be included?

@Peg18  Just tell them no. 'Unfortunately the listing does not include a computer or laptop for guest use.  You could check into local coffee shops or libraries that might offer a free terminal.'

I wouldn’t feel bad or worry about losing the booking. They should have their own laptop if they need one & not expect you to let them use yours.

@Peg18  That is an odd request and if you lose the booking over it, consider it a good thing. @Mark116 's suggestion is an excellent response.

Yikes. Can I also please use your phone, car and your bank account??

Perhaps your guest is simply inexperienced? Some people are just very new to travelling and absolutely clueless, bless them. But in that case it’s your responsibility to kindly and firmly set appropriate boundaries. Asking to use a stranger’s personal computer is just not OK.

this is a super odd request. you can easily say that your laptop is supplied by your work and you aren't allowed to let anyone else use it. or tell the truth: bruh, that's a weird request. use your phone.

this guest could very easily turn into a Milk and Cookies, and then want your home office, your stationery, your printer and whatever else they think they can use.

hard NO.

@Peg18  I agree with everyone else here that it's an outlandish request, and you shouldn't feel obliged to offer your computer or any other amenity that isn't advertised in your listing. But if the guest just wants to do something simple like print a document or locate their smartphone, you might be able to help them without sending them to the library.

Nope, I would never let a guest use my laptop and none have ever asked.

Several have asked to use the printer and, if they have problems connecting to it, they can send me whatever they need printed out.

I once had a guest who wanted to use my phone (to save money). I said no of course. That guest behaved inappropriately in many ways though, so if it's a deal breaker for your guest to use your laptop, I would say that's a guest you don't want.
