Military Discounts

I have a guest asking for a military discount. How do I determine they are military and what would be a normal discount?

I wouldn't offer discounts to military, emergency services or any other group @Kathie89

@Kathie89

Offering a discount is up to you, but as you pointed out, it's difficult to determine if it is legit. Many Hosts don't offer these for that reason.

Also, I have found most guests looking for a "discount" generally turn out to be problematic. Many Hosts have a polite Quick Reply created that says while they appreciate their service the listing is already competively priced for the amenities, location and season and unfortunately you won't be able to discount further. If you have a weekly or monthly discount that applies you could mention that. Then conclude with you hope they able to find other accomodations that would better suit their budget.

Makes complete sense. Thank you all for your answers. Much appreciated.

@Kathie89  We are retired military and we do not expect any AirBnB host to offer a discount to us.  I have had guests request a military discount, but they are reticent to provide a copy of their military ID, which other than sending a copy of their current orders, showing where they are stationed, would be the only way to tell if a person is military, active or retired.   Hotels and companies that do offer a military discount offer it at 10% of the transaction, less fees and taxes.

Thank you  Helen, Joan and Lorna for sharing how you'd approach this kind of enquiry!

@Kathie89 What did you decide to do in the end?

Funny part is I decided to give them a bit of a discount and when I did it gave them 24 hours to respond. by the time they did it was too late,  my place was listed  and the next person booked it. I thanked them for there service but I now have a feeling they might not have been a great guest so I lucked out:-)

Hi @Kathie89 ,

I have only been asked by AIRBNB guests for an additional discount and depending on the time of year, profile of the guest, how many in the group, I make a determination. If it feels like someone that could be a good guest, then yes, I would offer something nominal. There is no nightly price police and while I try hard to offer a great value maybe I was due to make an adjustment anyway. And some people just like to ask for discounts, it's how they operate, always push on price. It's an odd way to operate but they can still be good guests.

Thank you. This is such a great community I really appreciate everyone's advised.

Best Kathie
