My guest complained that the air in the house was making them sick when they returned the keys

On the day they checked in when I said I was just down the road if they needed anything and they asked where exactly. I texted during their stay to make sure all was fine and they said it was. Then they showed up at 8am at my house on the morning of check out to return the keys and when I asked how everything was started telling me they got sick and think it was mold or something in the house causing it. They were only there for a week and were staying to work on a landscaping job around an old house in Nova Scotia in February. I was startled because although the house can flood it is now drier than it has ever been and why did they wait so long to tell me. He also claimed that this caused him because his hired guy couldn't work due to illness. I said I would look into it. The house has been completely renovated recently with materials that are not know to emit fumes.

As soon as we could,  we checked the house, it was filthy, dirty dishes left everywhere, furniture moved, fridge full of dishes with leftovers, lots of food, garbage, and I found a cigarette package in the bedroom with butts in it. They also littered butts around the property.

I initially thought they mentioned they thought mold made them sick to avoid a bad review, I wouldn't review them for fear that they would write a review that could really damage our reputation. We have had lots of good reviews on the property and people who had stayed longer than these guys. The guys that stayed were booked in to the house by a third party who just joined airbnb prior to booking our house. Their health may have been affected by other factors other than the house.

I am doing a radon and formaldehyde test on the property but it may take more than 14 days after which the review period ends.

Does this seem weird to anyone else? Has this happened to anyone else? I want to avoid a review quarrel. They have posted one but I won't be able to read it until I post mine, I have photos of the mess they left.

Advice please.

@Shani71 What do you mean,"a review quarrel"?They have already left a review, and it's probably not going to be good. Please leave them an honest review regarding their extreme mess and disregard for house rules.

And unless you have reason to believe    the air quality   in the house is bad, I wouldn't bother with the testing-they just sound like bad guests making things up.

@Shani71     Unfortunately,  it is not weird there are some guests who behave that way, I have had a handful.  btw: if it was a third party booking, in my experience, Airbnb will remove the review. I agree with @Sarah977   leave an honest review and star rating etc. it will help a future host.

Radon and formaldehyde would need longer exposure than that before making you ill , surely?

@Shani71  So the place was filthy, with food and garbage left out everywhere, they smoked in your house and all over the property and they are concerned with air quality? What a joke.
