I believe there is a faulty rating system. Many of us we rated unfairly by 1 star reviews, plenty of messages in this community.
It's unfair how hosts are being treated by Airbnb.
The question however is: Why is it not calculated as an average of all the stars?
Check-in 4
Cleanliness 3
Accuracy 1
Communication 4
Location 5
Value 1
Average is: (4+4+1+4+5+1)/6=3
By averaging these scores, you'd expect the overall rating to be closer to 3 stars. However, this guest left a 1-star overall review, primarily unhappy about the daytime noise from scaffolding being erected across the street – an external factor beyond my control.
Why aren't overall ratings reflective of the average scores given across categories? This method could potentially offer a more balanced view of a guest's experience, acknowledging that while some aspects may fall short, others could be highly satisfactory.
Such an approach might also provide hosts a fairer opportunity to maintain and recover their reputation from reviews that disproportionately affect their overall rating. The difference between recovering from a 3-star review versus a 1-star review is significant, and I believe our rating system should accurately reflect the guest's experience in a balanced manner.
What are your thoughts on this? Could a recalibration of how overall ratings are determined benefit both hosts and guests by offering a more nuanced reflection of the stay?
Here is another review from a friend's account with whom I co-host. His mother was coughing when being sick and the reviewer destroyed their SuperHost account with Overall 2 stars.
Even though the average is 4 stars!!!
Check-in: 5
Cleanliness: 5
Accuracy: 3
Communication: 5
Location: 5
Value: 1
5+5+3+5+5+1=24. 24/6=4
Another thing is that the guests get average star from all the categories, I believe there is no OVERALL star rating that a host can leave, it is calculated as an average. But its not the same for the Hosts. Correct me if I'm wrong.
