Passport details and personal details on Airbnb safe?

Booking host asking for passport details 3 months before arrival in Spain.

i understand this is the law BUT Is it safe to send these details via Airbnb?

what does the booking host do with these details? Are they kept securely?

@Catriona73 The chance of anything going wrong is very small. The booking host is required to report the details to their government (as they are in many countries worldwide). I personally do not worry about these things as many entities including foreign countries, embassies, hotels and airlines have my passport details so who cares about one more group.
