Stuck in Verify Photo ID

So this is my first time using Airbnb, when I press the Request to book button, Airbnb asked me to verify my ID (using passport, visa, ec.) The problem is the system keep insisting that my government ID photo and the photo (selfie) I just took myself doesn't match.

Customer Support didn't help much but tell me to try links to links but the result doesn't change. I've tried with my passport photo is both scanned or taken by phone, my selfie is well-lit. I'm a foreigner living abroad and, I just want to book a room and I don't want my first time experience here become something full of hatred. Would appreciate any suggestion!

Thanks in advanced.

@HoaiAnh0 - the picture you are using now on your profile is of someone in a tan, hooded jacket, with the hood up, petting a cat.  You cannot see any part of their face or body.  It is not a profile picture that Airbnb can verify.  The picture needs to be of your face - something they can match to your passport as they use an automated service - which may be why you are getting a validation error.  Many hosts will ask for a picture in which they can recognize you when you arrive at their door.  The picture of person with cat could, quite literally, be anyone.  Personally we would require a picture where we can identify you by sight.  It's the only way we can be assured that we let you in and not a stranger.

Additionally, the link for verifying is to help you get fully verified by Airbnb - which is looks like you have completed.

I too am in the same boat- I've tried uploading about ten pictures of myself, taken with the camera on my computer.  When I finally got through on their "help" line  I was told to wait two hours and try again.  This is after waiting over five hours alread!  Get your act together Airbnb!

Another user with the same problem. I have been hosting on AirBnB for a few years with no issues and a verified government ID. I just submitted an experience for review and airbnb wants me to take a new picture so they can use a facial recognition program to match my already approved government ID. However, the program keeps saying they cannot match the pictures. I look nearly identical and cannot find any help on what to do. I have submitted at least 20 different pictures from all the available formats, different smiles, zoom, etc. And it still will not match my picture even though they look very similar. Please help.

Follow up: this is the pointless response Airbnb support provided, “Thank you for reaching out. We suggest that you keep on trying until the system accepted your selfie. Unfortunately there is no other way to do the verification but through the website.”

Thanks for nothing. Hopefully the community may have some actual tips or suggestions on how to make their crappy program match my picture.

Hello Everyone, I

I'm just slightly relieved after reading through all the messages about the ID-verification-via-photo issue...

As a Guest, I'm on the same boat and although i do understand the underlying reason for going through such verifications, I'm afraid the system is just not functioning properly at the moment, irrespective of georgraphies (I'm based in Europe, my Host is in Asia).

Fortunately, interactions with my Host have been smooth as we are both trying to make the match work!

My Host has agreed to temporarily deactivate the ID-verification-via-photo feature but struggles to turn it off.

Does anyone know if it is possible to turn it off by oneself? Or does it absolutely require an intervention from Airbnb's customer service?

Thank you in advance for any advice and suggestion!

Best wishes, MClaire

Hi All,

I've also faced this issue and I solved it by scanning the ID card using TinyScanner app and uploading the black and white version JPG through browser, after a while the system responded that verification was successful. Hope it works for you as well.

OMG!!!! You are a life saver!! I did what you said and it worked. It's very strange that black & white photos work better than color ones but whatever...it worked and I am so grateful you shared your trick. Thank you.

I'm a host of many years and going through same problems loading my photo ID as AirBnB has requested. Get to the part of the process where a page with a camera icon pops up.....but won't allow me to take a pic. Has anyone worked out how to do this?

Hi Tass,

Just like many who reported a similar night-marish issue , I was trying (1) to take a pic of my face via my laptop browser, then (2) a pic of my face as it appeared on my passport.

As long as I was trying to make  the part of the passport page that was showing my face (and only my face) fit on Airbnb's interface, it did not work.

After many hours spent with someone of the customer service on the phone during two consecutive days, and a dozen trials of picture-taking, I had the idea to make the entire page of the passport visible in the interface.
At that moment only, it did work, and instantly.

I hope this can help at some point! 🙂
Best wishes,
MClaire

P.S.
However, I have to admit that I felt and still feel very uncomfortable that some personal details were instantly updated on my airbnb profile in the process.

There are certainly many valid situations for requesting guests' personal info.

However, i feel that ensuring the right for a user to keep one's personal details to oneself is also a very valid requirement to be taken into account, especially if the service is used in a normal and honest manner.

These are personal info that I never share on any social or e-commerce platform. Even more so that I've never had to do so until now, and the large majority of my experiences and interactions with Airbnb Hosts have always been very smooth.

The right to anonymize some personal info, again, especially when the service is used in a honest manner, is one best way to ensure data privacy, in my view.

And it seems regrettable (at least to me) that such possibility is not available at this point.

I sîncerely hope that some improvements will be made by Airbnb in this regard in a near future.

Hi Guys

I've had a completed host booking which I have not been paid on due to this issue. I am being asked for a verified photo which is not getting regonised. I have several host bookings coming up so can't change my Gov ID as they will get cancelled.

Any idea's on what to do? Their saying maybe my government ID isn't me? and they can't check it. Whats the point in doing it then!!!
