How can I check the place in Thailand I've just paid 50% for is real and not a scam as it says they will need to keep the passport for a few day which can't be right?

The time to check whether you're happy with a listing is before you booking by checking the description, reviews and ratings .

Having booked why do you now have concerns it might not be real? .

does the host  say anywhere on the listing that they require to hold your passport.

many countries as you know have to take copies of your ID when you stay in paid for accommodation. Have you checked if Thailand is one of those countries ?

if so say you're happy for them to take a copy of your ID but not to retain it @Chris24403

Be advised that Thailand is notorious for "bait and switch" tactics. You book one accomodation and upon arrival you are told it's not available and you are asked to switch to another ("better") accomodation. You are NOT required to do this if you don't want to. Contact Airbnb Support and advise you are not happy being switched to another accomodation and have them cancel the stay for you. Be sure to have alternate plans in place if this happens, as if it is the busy season, Airbnb may have difficulty finding another place for you.

If you allow it, the Host must complete the change on the Airbnb platform by altering the reservation and you have to accept it when you receive the notifcation message.  Be aware if you allow it, you have no idea what the new accomodation looks like.
