Hey my name is Leah, I have been very interested in learning more about how to start with AirBnb. Is there anyone I could rea...
Im having a problem with an incorrect 1099-K form. ! I have been a Superhost for over 5 years. I have always had cohost that were paid out directly and separately by Airbnb. In the past, I have never met Airbnb's threshold. of 200 reservations or earned $20k in any given year. I understand the tax changes that are going into effect for 2022, but my 1099-K is for 2021. It appears that Airbnb combined my total earnings with the total earnings of my co-hosts on my 1099-K. This is an error. It is a completely inaccurate and illegal reporting of my gross earnings. After calling and emailing Airbnb, I asked several times, yet I have not been provided with a contact #, email or link to directly deal with anyone in Airbnb's ACCOUNTING Dept. I only keep repeatedly being thrown back and forth to different Airbnb Customer Service "Specialists". The Customer Service reps do not have access to my 2021 earnings and are not qualified to assist me. I cannot get any legitimate answers and need to have my 1099-K corrected. Additionally, I asked all 4 of the reps to provide me with the Airbnb provision or the legal description on any related reporting changes for 2021. I would like a logical and legal explanation. I still have not been provided this info either. I do not understand why we are unable to directly deal with those that prepared these 1099-K forms??? What is going on? Does anyone else know?
Is your cohost listed on your account with a taxpayer ID attached?
@Jill104 your info does not come out wxcept on your own device. I clicked on the link and it’s my tax info that shows not yours.
So anyone that is logged in AirBnb when they click on that link that Emila42 posted , they DO NOT get YOUR INFO but ONLY THEIRS.
I do not see your info when I clicked on the link, I SEE MINE.
Do not worry.
@Emilia42 Please remove this link from this thread. Why do you have access to my personal account? This is a public thread and should not be allowed.
@Jill104 I do not have access to your account. You are logged into Airbnb on whatever device you are using so you access your own info. When I click any Airbnb link I get my own info.
I had to laugh at that one a little.
@Jill104 The link that Emilia posted will adapt to your information under your account and is not a link that shows your info to anyone else.
More to the point, unless you have entered the tax info for your co-host, the 1099 is going to show the gross earnings of your account. If you have paid a co-host or management service as a part of your listing, on your Federal taxes you can show those payments as an expense, decreasing your taxable income, thereby adjusting the value shown on the 1099. Your accountant can verify that.
Lastly, there is a misconception that a 1099 is generated when there are 200 bookings and a certain amount of income. It is 200 transactions, which would include the separate transactions for the service fee, taxes and credit card fees. So each booking could have as many as five separate transactions applied to it, especially if there are refunds or additional charges for damages.
@Lorna170 thank you for this explanation. I appreciate your time. I think this is still an legitimate error that needs to be adjusted and corrected. My cohost was paid out directly from Airbnb, not me. The payments go directly into my cohosts account from Airbnb. I never receive their money. My 1099-K is therefor not correct. If I go to my "Transaction History" on my account, the earnings are separated and totaled up for each "individual" that earned that $$ amount. I never, personally paid out any money directly to any cohost or a management company. Therefor, the reported gross amount on my 1099-K is not the amount that I individually earned....regardless of the number of "transactions", bookings or certain amount of income, the total gross amount that I earned is still wrong.
This has never been an issue in any previous year. I believe it is just an error that can easily be corrected. I do not understand why there is NOBODY that I can directly speak to in the ACCOUNTING DEPT. who has full access to my payout information for 2021. This is a real problem.
Hi Jill! i'm sorry about your situation 😕 We have been dealing with a similar issue. Our 1099 is also incorrect. They added all of the earnings from ALL listings, including an Airbnb outside the U.S that is paid to an account also outside the U.S. From my understanding, filing a "corrected" 1099 is possible, but just like you I have been thrown back and forth and now completely ignored after numerous attempts to contact them... Have you had any luck?
AIRBNB EXPERIENCES
Airbnb takes 20% as a service fee for Airbnb Experiences.
I am just noticing that on my 1099-K that Airbnb is putting the total without taking without taking their 20% service out of the total.
