How Airbnb Collecting and Remitting Alberta Tourism Levy?

I've heard and noticed Airbnb have been collecting Alberta Tourism Levy for new reservations from October 1, 2024 (booked after), so we shouldn't need to add it as a tax for those bookings that come in after this date.

- Does anyone know how Airbnb remit this levy to the Alberta government?

- How will we hosts know whether/how much has been remitted?

- I just recently registered with Alberta Tourism Levey account and have back filed the levy returns. Do I just file until the end of Sep 2024, because Airbnb should be remitting starting Oct 1 2024?

Hi @James-and-Nora0

Does anyone know how Airbnb remit this levy to the Alberta government?

How this is done is not shared with us but we can only assume they are being remitted.

How will we hosts know whether/how much has been remitted?

We do not know but it should be 4% of the total reservation including cleaning fees AND the guest service fee.

You still need to file for any reservations that were confirmed before October 1st.  So this means that if you had someone book in August for Christmas, you would still need to submit this as Airbnb has not collected for this guest.

I hope this helps.

Hello - Is the tourism levy listed at the "property use taxes" or the "occupancy taxes"? I just got a new booking and it said  - is this the tourism levy then? Thanks so much!

Your guest paid $180.24 in Occupancy Taxes. Airbnb remits these taxes on your behalf.
