Got any House Plants?

Just added a few house plants and love them! It was fun picking them out. There were so many options!   

So do you have house plants? Do you and guest like them? Please share a picture even if lighting isn't good! 

 Do you prefer artificial or real? How old are they and do you need to re pot them as they grow? These are in the plastic containers that sit inside the ceramic ones. That way after watering them the ceramic pot catches the water and has plastic plug over the hole in the bottom.

I started with 2 plants...Every so often I put myself on a plant ban, as I have more in other areas. And during plant ban I buy a book....then I put myself on a book buy ban, and reward myself with a plant. Its a mental battle always. 🙂

We have heaps of house plants! I'm obsessed. 

I have all the usual suspects: pothos, philo, peace lily, zz, monstera, sygonium, succulents, chinese money plant, begonia and a large ruby ficus. 

I hate plastic plants, they do nothing for me. Where you can't have a plant (due to low light, etc) I cut foliage. When we drive around our rural area I am always on the lookout for interesting foliage, in addition to what I grow at home. I recently found a farm that grows the very trendy silver dollar eucalyptus, and on the road in front of the farm are a bunch of self-seeded trees, free foliage! I keep secateurs in the car.  I'm keen to plant a row of these trees on our farm somewhere. 

Even in the tropics it's very easy to find things that will last a long time in water, much of the dracaena family (and they'll root in the water too, so you get a free plant) are great options, with a very woody stalk and long tapered leaves, they are visually stunning as cuttings.

@Gillian166  Half the plants in my now jungley garden came from cuttings I took from plants growing elsewhere or seeds I gathered. 

I have really small pewter vase I use in the guest room when a guest checks in, that is perfect for that small room (a big bouquet would be overwheming). It's actually meant to be a candle holder, but makes a perfect tiny vase. Found it at the second hand store for 50 cents. I put whatever happens to be blooming in it, and same as you, I use foliage if there's nothing blooming. 

Here's the pewter vase, although in this photo it's in the kitchen. 

 

I used to have a pottery vase, but a guest accidentally broke it, so I replaced it with something unbreakable.

oh we also love opshopping (thrifting) even more than house plants! haha. love it! It's great to repurpose something old and make a unique and interesting decor piece. 

We have to be smart in this business, so no way am I going to pay for flowers, not when you can find foliage for free literally everywhere.

@Gillian166 So cool! I'll try and look up some of the ones you mentioned! I have a few potted plants and raised beds I try to keep up with. I  few kale plants have been growing for two years. The pots have blue berry bushes but its impossible to keep the grass and other stuff that grow up.

@John5097 great topic I have 3 pot plants inside our Airbnb cottage. They go in prior to gusets and outside when they leave in the shade of the garden, watering and feeding if required (it is like putting the dog and cat outside, watering and feeding them). They are on their 2nd year of living in this lifestyle and 1 has been repotted. 

Houseplants are good for your health and they look good. They release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide and they also give you something to do and look after.

@Laurelle3 Thats what I was thinking, just put them outside in the shade from time to time. I guess that means I'll need two more, just like extra set of sheets to change out! 🙂 

A tenant gifted this one to me when she set out on an extended traveling journey.

I just kept it outside and never watered it once in two years. Airbnb guest pick out the weeds and maybe water it.

These are some more pics of the the plants and the local outdoor center. 

There is a green house warehouse just for tropical plants. They are all color coded, for how much sun light they require, but didn't have name tags. 

Maybe someone can recognize some, as I'm interested in the ones mentioned so far.

@John5097  The plant you have in a pot with  the white flower coming out is a peace lily. 

The 8th photo down is a rubber tree. They don't need much light at all. 

The photo below that- the plants on the left look like areca palms. They are a really good palm for indoors- they don't need much light, but they do like to be kept moist. 

There is a website app called snapplant, I think. You can take a photo of any plant and it will identify it for you.

The rubber tree is what I call a ruby ficus. Very hardy! 

any plant with dark leaves can handle low light better.

9 is a fiscus rubber plant. Hardy, likes mid light, let it dry before watering.

10 parlour palm. like to be kept moist but not overly wet, they like humidity and non direct light.  It`s a canopy plant. Known to grow in shade of trees. My one thrives in the bathroom

11 they are also ferns, the 2 tone one I know as star fern. Again, moist and non direct light. 

14 these are peperomia genus, easy growing. Plenty light but not strong light. Likes to drink. 

12, I can see Spider plants , they like good light, water regularly but dont soak, they can be fickle. Great for hanging baskets, they also flower on long stalks, leve the flowers when they die, small baby spider plants will grow, which you can re-pot and get more plants.

It's still on my to-do-list. Now I've got a big fake plant and a bouquet of dried flowers.

When people are here for a couple of nights (4 or more) I always get a big bouquet of fresh flowers. In summer the field in front of our Tiny House is full of flowers (in the area here everybody is a flower grower, big companies).  Yessss, it's Holland 😉
