Sustainability, eco-friendly and energy-saving tips

I'm a mid-career sustainability student (and Airbnb guest) researching how guests (hosts too) can be more accountable for things like waste, electricity, purchased goods and overall emissions. I think it's a missed opportunity for the hosting/hotel industry to reduce their emissions. Are there any unique or creative ways guests or hosts have tried to stay eco-conscious during a stay/booking? 

I think hosts are on the right track with messaging: Create a unique experience, promote local, present unique listings. How have you seen this applied in the sustainability arena?

I have a bin for 10 cent bottle returns and refill  shampoo, body wash & conditioner. I use hand towels in the kitchen rather than paper towels.
