Used sponges… So what do hosts do with short use sponges?

I have over 100 one time used sponges as I put a new one at the sink for incoming guests!
I’ve run them though a wash cycle, they are clean, look brand new… any ideas?

Jeri, thank you for being a considerate and thorough host. We can't provide new usables for every guest. But when it comes to cheap disposable items it's good to see you care enough about what you do to start from scratch for each incoming guest. You are a fine host Jeri.

When I am a guest if something looks like it has had a good bit of use.....towels, bed linens, my first reaction is, "I wonder how many heads have snored their way through a night on that pillow"!

If I see nice crisp creases in the linens, nicely folded towels I have confidence the host has gone that extra yard just for me. I like the smell of Domestos on hard floor surfaces. Once again it tells me the host cares about hygiene to have mopped the floor whether it needed it or not.

I am not mad on air fragrances......all they do is cover a multitude of sins.

But, even after going to the extent that I do, 'Cleanliness' is my worst rated category!

I have come to the conclusion it is difficult to host in an old building. Some guests associate old with dirty, and it doesn't matter how much effort you put into it, 'Cleanliness' is always going to be an issue.

Cheers........Rob.

I found several varieties on Amazon for Domestos, which one do you use?  Thank you!

I recycle as you are doing, but use the "used" sponge for cleaning.

@Jeri121,

If they look new after you've cleaned them, I see no reason not to place them in a rental for guests to use.

Some hosts provide new sponges for each new guest, and that is probably due to low cost and ample availability.  I say use supplies in the manner that best suits the host's ability to procure and maintain the stock of items that are acceptable for guest usage.

Don't just believe what I say, check the Airbnb Help Center

I never ever leave a used sponge, even if washed and looked brand new, for a new guest. If I were a guest, I wouldn't touch that thing if doesn't seem to be brand new.

I buy pack of 10 from dollar store and replace it for each guest, they are cheap looking but surely never used. I use the used ones to wash off the sink after guests and for other cleanings  before throwing them in the garbage. Collecting them is not hygienic,  putting them in wash, not wise energy-wise, hanging them to dry to be reused?  How much time you guys have to spare if this is just for the sponge part of your Airbnb, I am wondering :-0

We don’t use sponges. We use dish cloths and wash them every time with the dish towels and other towels .

I suggest getting rid of them.  It is likely that even using  them for cleaning may pose a hygenic surface risk to incoming guests.  Best to err on the side of caution.

I agree with most that I wouldn't place them back into the rental. I'm assuming you use them in your own home so why not use them yourself? I personally don't use them and don't have a better idea for you. Good luck with your stash!

I discard them as part of my hygene strategy

I never use sponges. I use microcloths which are then washed at 60° and reused.

Hi Jeri,

I like to get the most out of the sponges, so I would use it for my own cleaning use to scrub sinks with as they are still good for that.

We take them home if they are still good but a bit too beat up for use in the rental unit.
