Update: January, 2019
A few months ago, we told you about some changes Airbnb was making to the way guest profile photos are displayed. You can read the original post, below.
Now that those changes are being introduced gradually, we want to make sure you have all the information you need. Hereโs a recap of what will be changing, along with some tips.
New photo process
Moving forward, rather than displaying a potential guestโs profile photo before the booking is accepted, youโll receive a guestโs photo after youโve accepted the booking request. If you have Instant Book turned on, you wonโt notice a change to the booking process.
Airbnb does not require guests to have profile photos. Although most guests provide a photo, some have told us they donโt want to share a picture of themselves when booking, and we listened.
At the same time, many of you told us that you value guest profile photos, and we listened to you, too. Thatโs why weโve introduced a new option for hosts to be able to customize their own booking requirements.
New host control
You now have the option to require that your guests provide a profile photo. Again, the photo will be visible to you only after you accept the booking request. If youโd like to require your guests to provide a profile photo, youโll need to turn on the control option in your settings for each of your listings, either on mobile or on web. Specifically:
On mobile:
On web:
If you take this step and a potential guest doesnโt already have a profile photo, theyโll be prompted to upload one before they can request to book your space. A guestโs profile photo will not be available to you until after you accept the booking request. If the guest doesnโt want to provide a photo, then they wonโt be able to book your space.
Additional support
If you choose to require that your guests have a profile photo and one of your potential guests uploads an image that doesnโt show their faceโa photo of a sunset or their dog, for instanceโthen you can call Airbnbโs Community Support. Theyโll work with you to address the issue, and if you feel uncomfortable hosting someone without a photo that shows their face, you can request to cancel the reservation penalty-free.
As a reminder, Airbnbโs nondiscrimination policy prohibits hosts from making booking decisions or canceling reservations based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status.
As an extra step, as always, you can require guests to provide a government ID to Airbnb in order to be able to book your space. You can read more about that process here.
Why these changes are important
We talked with lots of hosts and guests about profile photos, and we think these changes satisfy the core concerns and feedback we heard. Weโll be paying close attention to how these changes to profile photos affect our community, and will continue working to improve and simplify the process to ensure you feel comfortable hosting. We hope youโll share your feedback with us so we can continue to build a community where everyone can belong. Thank you for hosting.

October, 2018
You've been asking a lot about guest profile photos, and Airbnb has been working on new policies to address your concerns. Here is an update from Airbnb:
Today, weโre announcing some changes we will be making to the way we display guest profile photos.
Moving forward, rather than displaying a potential guestโs profile photo before the booking is accepted, hosts will receive a guestโs photo in the booking process only after theyโve accepted the booking request. Airbnb does not require all guests to provide a photo. Instead, weโll be giving hosts the option to ask their guests to provide a profile photo, which will only be presented to hosts after they accept the booking. We have discussed some of this work in the past and we want you to know more about the changes we will be making in the coming months.
We have participated in a number of conversations with hosts and guests regarding this topic. We have listened to our community, and while most guests provide a photo, some guests told us they donโt want to share a picture of themselves when booking. We also recognize that concerns have been raised about the potential for photos to be misused in a way that violates our nondiscrimination policy.
At the same time, hosts have told us that they value profile photos because they can help hosts and guests get to know one another before a trip begins and help hosts recognize guests when they check in. Additionally, weโve seen how photos can be a useful tool for enhancing trust and promoting community.
We want to balance these concerns. Airbnb does not require guests to provide a profile photo when booking a listing and, as we discussed earlier this summer with our hosts, we will be implementing a series of changes in the months ahead:
If a host cancels a reservation after they see a guestโs photo, the guest will have an easy way to contact Airbnb and report any concerns about potential discrimination by the host in violation of our nondiscrimination policy and Community Commitment. If any guest believes he or she has been discriminated against and notifies our team, weโll immediately help them book an alternative listing consistent with our Open Doors Policy, investigate the report, and take appropriate action. Any host who violates our nondiscrimination policy may be permanently banned from using Airbnb.
This announcement follows the commitment we made in 2016 to evaluate how we display guest profile photos in the booking process. As we implement these changes in the coming months, we hope youโll share your feedback with us so we can continue to make thoughtful changes that make the Airbnb community a place where everyone can belong.
Hi all, it looks like we are all in the same page. Please make sure to give your negative feedback on their help section, select feedback , hosting and hosting tools. The more they get the better! They need to listen to our safety concerns!
Hi Donata,
I have already done this, feedback, etc., earlier today. I sent all my comments posted on this site to them. So far I have not heard anything back from them. We will wait and see. I encourage everybody to do the same. Copy and paste ALL your comments and send them to Airbnb's feedback. And make sure you request a response to your concerns. Let's see how they handle the people, i.e, Hosts, who make them the money. If we all band together and take this a step further, we can make a difference. We can't just let this issue fall away and be forgotten. You're right, "the more they get the better"!
Sorry, I meant to say I did this earlier YESTERDAY, (sending in my comments on feedback), which has given them lots of time to get back to me. I'm sure they're trying to deal with everyone, at least I hope so, and let's hope we're clogging up their lines!
Thanks! I did this and suggested they read this thread!
I am a single woman living in the property where I rent a room out. I need to look after my property, myself and the neighbors. I have been hosting in Airbnb for over two years and checked guests profiles and reviews carefully prior to booking. On two occasions I did cancel a booking when I felt un unfortable with it. I feel unsafe if someone without a face photo books and that immediately seems untrustworthy to me. On the other occasion, the person's expression was aggressive and it also made me feel unsafe. I don't understand why Abb is planning to make photos available only till AFTER a person has booked. It makes no sense. If I have to share space and personal belongings, how can I have any choice if I actually want to do it with someone who I haven't seen. I thought Abb's idea of sharing economy is go create better communities. How will these changes help? Hosts are at huge risks and disadvantage.
I am having exactly this problem with today's guests who are employees booked by their employer! The employer books himself as the guest, but actually he is not the one coming to stay. His profile photo with his wife and baby tricked me to believe the booking is for himself and wife, but in his private message he tells me it's for two of his employees who are working in the area. This is not fair at all as we hosts have to adhere to the rules and upload a clear photo of our face and tell the world every detail about ourselves. Why can't the same rule apply for a total stranger who is coming to stay in our homes? Will airbnb accept we decline a booking if we don't feel comfortable about the guest in any way, or has that been changed ?
I think if we cancel , as I understand it, we will be penalsied...
It's not only deceitful but a breach of terms of service!
Call Airbnb and get this booking canceled. Superhost helpline: 1 (888) 326-5753โฌ
Good luck.
You should be aware that you will not be covered by Airbnb's insurance if this person is not an approved Airbnb company booking agent. You should verify this information Before you continue the booking process. I donโt think you can be dinged if the booking is recognized as fraudulent and against company stated policy, but then In not a lawyer, just my opinion.
This also opened you to additional risk under ABBs 3rd party rule: any third party bookings are not covered by ABBs support or damage guarantees. They may be very nice respectful people, but if theyโre not, youre out of luck.
One way to get around this loophole (if you have advance warningโmany of us do not) is to impose an additional security deposit refundable if all goes well.
Stay safe.
Best of luck.
Okay, let's follow this absurd train into the wall. Hosts, change your profile photo to a daisy. Hand draw pictures of the outside of your home, and the room that you are offering. When your guests PAY in full for the room, send them actual photos.
This is really the end of airbnb. How udderly rediculous.

Mandy I like your idea! If they donโt make changes and address this soon enough we can certainly think about doing something like this!!!
Seriously. Let's do this.

heres my new profile pic. Iโm generally happy and want to play but if you mess with me...read my teeth
I am horrified by this change. I host my spare room and am a solo parent. People say donโt judge a book by its cover but someoneโs profile picture gives me an indication of the guest.
Does anyone know if Airbnb are listening to our concerns? And other than no longer hosting has anyone got any tips or solutions on how to handle this?
I do ask a lot of questions of the guest before approving...
