Guest left early, refusing to cancel.

My guest messaged me last night to say they were going to be checking out a day early. Their reasoning was “nothing is

open”. Everything in town was open other than the public library due to the fact the staff are on strike. Seriously doubt that’s why they are choosing to cancel.
I asked them to please cancel the reservation when they leave so I can reenter the suite, etc. They instead sent an alteration request for a refund for the remaining night but I am unable to rebook that night and do not want to eat the cost of the empty calendar night. I reiterated to them that they would need to just cancel the listing, and pointed them in the direction of the policies. I also declined their request.
They were unpleasant guests. I contacted air bnb and they say it’s all on me. They have left and still have an open booking. Not sure what to do as I would prefer not to be responsible as their host for the 24 hours they are not here.
Preparing for retaliation review as well..

It would be a big fat no from me, @Jessica2628. Not your fault (or problem).

@Jessica2628   I would have perhaps approached this in a slightly different way by asking them to cancel their last night in order to re-open your calendar.. and then, if you managed to secure a booking for that night then you would refund them and at the same time explaining to them that you would both be trying to mitigate your ‘losses’.  If they have not cancelled and you are not refunding, then effectively they are paying for the space and you do not have the right to enter it unless it is an emergency.
