A friend received a notice from the city she lives in stating she is in violation of local laws for short term rentals. She is getting fined $1000. Per day . She went to the Airbnb site and found a listing that is in her general area. Thought the house is nothing like her home. Somehow that listening once booked is being misdirected to her address.
Airbnb will not talk to her because she is not a member. The police can't take the listing down
@Susan1145 Firstly I suggest your friend points out that the city is harassing her for something she hasn't done. She should then warn them she will sue them if they do not rescind the fines.
I think she should then report this fraud to the police. They should be able to help by using the special police-only contact details that you should be able to find using google. Hopefully they will then take the listing down.
@Susan1145 Yikes!!! This needs to be addressed immediately!! Media has reported several other scams similar to this. Have your friend setup a guest profile on Airbnb ASAP. Then she will be able to contact Airbnb for help directly after her Guest Profile is setup. She can then also call 855-424-7262 immediately and speak to them and report this. She should copy the listing URL that is doing this and provide to Airbnb. I would do this ASAP!! I would also have your friend take screen shots of the fake listing and hold on to them for future reference with the city.
@Bhumika, @Jenny can you bring to the attention of Airbnb? Sounds like it needs to be looked at right away!
Hi @Joan2709 Thank you so much for tagging me on this one!
@Susan1145 I understand this is an urgent situation for your friend. For me to forward it to the Support teams, I will need some more information about this particular listing.
Can you please help me by sharing the link to this listing in question by sending me a direct message? (Along with the name of your friend who is the owner of the address and their email id?)
As Joan mentioned, does your friend have an existing guest profile even on Airbnb? If so, do share its link as well.
i would definitely suggest her to go to an attorney & set up the complaint that if Airbnb looses they must pay her legal fees & court cost.
I’m really sorry that happened to her.
First things first: Airbnb has an incorrect listing. Once that is corrected the city could appreciate the fact they can't collect a dime since no guests were even hosted. And the lawyers be disappointed, bummer.😜
@Susan1145 first things first , who is doing this ?Obviously either ,whoever is in your friends house or whoever is taking the bookings from the other so called Airbnb. The police should be able to assist you in this if it is explained clearly what is occurring. Its very complicated but sounds like someone is making money from this , who ?Fraud is the crime which you need to report to the police ..after that you should be able to get Airbnbs attention as currently there is no proof.Hosts have names and contact details , look for them , look for reviews or previous guests to see if guests have been misdirected.... H
So far all one can derive from what the OP said is that the listing is erroneous, not that a crime has even been committed. If her friend lives in the house, no guests have shown up at her door yet, since she became aware of it by being told by the county, not by '**' at her door ready to come in with their suitcases. 😁
