Booking a room in the same city that I am resident of

I reside in Kolkata . But due to family issues I have to leave my house . Am I permitted to book a local host ?
 Kindly note that local residents are not allowed to stay near by hotels in Kolkata. Does the same apply for AirBnB?

@Ankit2  Airbnb does not have any rules against booking in your city of residence. But if there's some kind of local law restricting your access to hotels, Airbnb would be obliged to defer to that. 

Also, many hosts are hesitant to host locals because these bookings have a whole extra set of risks  - for example, that the guest might be using the property for criminal activity,  a party, or an attempt at refusing to leave. A host might have reasonable concerns that the family issues that forced you out of your own home are going to follow you into theirs.

You should be able, but why are residents not allowed to stay in hotels?

I believe a host may ask why you need a place at your home town. If your explanation is good, I would see no problem (I had a guest that lived locally, when to the local university, but her landlord was upgrading the bathroom, so she booked my room for a week, the time that would take for the builders to finish the work. )
