The other day while I was waiting in line for a coffee, I came across a social media account promising to elevate my Hosting game. I clicked it and found a series of how-to videos and tips. Following different links, I quickly found myself going down the rabbit hole, exploring and getting information fatigue.
But this got me thinking. Thanks to social media, there truly is no shortage of information you can find just by scrolling. You could run into something you weren't even looking for or deliberately search for what it is you want to know. You could even be the one sharing your learnings with others.
Personally, I turn to Instagram profiles for tips on interior design, ideas, or quite simply aesthetically pleasing content. I'm certainly not the only one looking for inspiration online, so I'm curious to know:
Do you utilise social media to help you on your Hosting adventure, and if so, what for?
I'm keen to read your replies.
Thanks
Nick
No way, no how, not ever again going to happen! Several months ago, Airbnb launched a local Facebook page. Ok want to be in touch locally. So created a Facebook Account. Within 3 days, got spam email that even quoted an old password. Killed that account real fast!!
So to answer your Social Media question. Not happening.
BtW - You may want to watch the movie "The Circle". Well worth a couple of hours of your life.
We always welcome feedback on different initiatives, and I will pass this on @M199.
Personally I'd much rather see you spending more time on the CC than any social media, so I won't be complaining you don't want to use them 😀
I have seen the movie, and I must say, it's a lighter adaptation of the dystopian novel by the same name. More... Netflix friendly compared to how darker the book was.
I've managed to avoid the hospitality influencers. Probably a good thing.
I spend my time online with design and user experience, leadership and change, design ethics, hiking and outdoors life, ecology and conservation, small land farming, and wildlife management. That's quite enough for my work and personal indulgence.
I'm very intrigued with "wildlife management" @Stephen1156
By the way, I'm sorry it took me so long to come back to all of you @Sarah977 @Dimitar27 @Ann72 @Cathie19 and others on the thread - It's been a bit rough since Friday due to a horrible toothache, but the antibiotics seem to be working now 🙂 Hoping it will be alright in the next couple of days.
Hey, @Nick! The wildlife management part comes along with living and working in a rural area.
There's a whole "what I didn't initially realise about my tree change" story could be written about things like this. Short version is we live on 100 acres in the Australian bush, surrounded by a mix of farming, other bush blocks like ours, nature reserve (https://www.bushheritage.org.au/places-we-protect/new-south-wales/brogo), and a 985km2 national park (https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/wadbilliga-national-park) still recovering from the 2019-20 bushfires.. The wildlife here is a mix of native species (some with at risk habitats that only exist in our local area), domesticated stock species (cattle, sheep, and goats) and introduced pests (two deer species, feral cats, rabbits, foxes).
We have several trail cameras around the property to keep an eye on the numbers and types of animals out and about, as well as to watch for unauthorised hunting. We track counts and locations of animals as much as we can (it will eventually become more of a focus) to make sure the introduced species aren't getting too many, and that the native species habitats are protected.
For example, I'm keeping a close eye on this mama wombat and her joey. I haven't located their burrow yet, but I have a general sense of where it is.
they really are @Helen427 - along with ouzo, but that's just too tipsy for 10 am so only cloves will have to do 🙂
Hi everyone and Nick!
Yes, I do use Instagram and Facebook for the reasons you mentioned.
Now I'm ordering the book! Books are always so much better than tv/video/dvd remakes.
Personally I'm weary of social media influencers/gurus in the Airbnb/short-term rental space. I may follow some Airbnb facebook groups but this is mainly to share experiences from other hosts in specific communities. For design inspiration, I follow r/RoomPorn on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/RoomPorn/).
