Guests breaching COVID 19 rules... where is the Airbnb support?

I have been inundated this week with bookings from guests who live in UK Tier 3 areas. Government guidance says these guests are not allowed to travel out of their Tier 3 area, except in exceptional circumstances. A nice little holiday in an Airbnb is not one of those exceptions!

I've had guests lie to me, ask me to turn a blind eye, argue the guidance etc but I am following the rules and as a result I have had to refuse or cancel over £2000 work of bookings this week. The vast majority of guests attempting to book have been from Tier 3 London, they don't think the rules apply to them. My issue here is two fold:

(1) Where is the help from Airbnb to follow the rules, many of  these guests are registered as living in London yet there doesn't seem to be any restriction on their ability to book. Added to that if I cancel their stay once ive found they are breaching the rules, the dates get blocked on my calendar.

(2) I'm starting to wonder if I'm being an idiot stringently following the rules. Other local properties are all fully booked, are these owners turning a blind eye? Do they just not care?

What are you doing to keep to the rules? In my opinion we are in this mess because people arent following the rules....I'm just trying to do my bit.

@Alexandra199 You are not being silly, I’ve had to really question all of my bookings and inquiries lately because of stricter government Covid restrictions in my area. I feel like I’m not being a welcoming host, but I also know it’s for the better good. Keep doing you and don’t worry about the other hosts that are booked.

Thanks Katrina, its good to hear other hosts who are doing the right thing. 

 There is a lot of disdain from the community that people like me are bringing the virus in by renting to guests from London etc. I am not doing this, but i get lumped into the collective. I am afraid it is hosts willing to bend the rules who are adding to this disdain when other are trying to do the right thing.

To the best of my knowledge, the UK is not a Communist Country but that of a Democratic Country where Laws still exist.

Be mindful also that it was mentioned way back in April that France had another 'Variant of a more deadly Coronavirus/ Covid", no doubt at some stage it will be named Covid21.

  Whose Science Papers were relied on from the outset that this whole chain of events traces back to? Which country of Origin has been relied on all the way through as a Template that's been used across the world?

At no time did I expect it to get taken over by people spouting rubbish and conspiracy theories about this dreadful pandemic. I do not appreciate your post. I can honestly say I don't know WHAT to believe anymore, and any views I post are more for a "What do people make of this?" than wanting a fight. Which I don't, because I don't feel strongly enough about any viewpoint for that!

I DO try to follow UK gov rules at present, whether I think they make sense, or whether I'm not sure.... And I've had Airbnb cancel one booking post Christmas, and agonised about two more; Are they within 'the rules' or aren't they?

And I enjoy reading different points of view!

I have avoided getting into arguments on here @Helen427 , but can not let this pass. The new variant identified in the UK is taken seriously by our scientific community and by the WHO. It has not been found to be more deadly, but to transmit more easily. I just watched a video talk by our local council public health consultant, who says that in our town prevalence has doubled in around 10 days and is now 300 per 100,000. Other places are worse.

Prof Michie expresses views on the pandemic which are in line with those of other experts. I have no idea of her politics, or marital history, but so what. @Alexandra199 @Katrina79 @Helen350

When I found that SAGE document in March the first thing that hit me was, "Why are they using and comparing a situation that happened in Israel where there were b***Bings and school children were rightly so kept home from school with a completely different situation and that of a 'Virus'?"

It's also interesting to note that in the UK National ID cards were proposed in early 2000's under Tony Blair's governance. He's very active in WEF and pushed for those things in Rwanda.

There's an article he wrote in from memory 2016  tucked in WEF under his name and he has recently tweeted on Rwanda where life, the way Parliament is operated and Healthcare systems are quite different to most Westernised countries.

We do in fact have access here in New Zealand to the same official information used in the UK which may be of interest.

The Community is a place to discuss all things Airbnb, and whilst we also welcome off-topic discussions, it really isn’t the place to get into political debates. There have been a lot of opinions shared here and whilst everyone is entitled to believe what they wish to, the conversation is starting to devolve into name-calling and content which is neither relevant nor helpful, and this behaviour does not fit the Community Center Guidelines and the purpose of the CC.

I have just read your posts and want to know your thoughts on a booking i have just had to evict from my listing. Booked for 8 guests, rules would not allow 8 guest so they have changed the booking to 6 guest…but all 8 turned up today! Claimed 2 were staying elsewhere, when i asked them for proof of their other reservation…they could not provide it. So i asked them all to leave…contacted Airbnb advised them of the situation, said a specialist team member would contact me asap…still waiting 8 hours later!
