Pre approved enquiry declined before time had elapsed

Hi

I made an initial enquiry on a property.  Host believed it was being held for me. I received email from Airbnb stating I had until next day at 5pm to book it.  To hosts surprise it was booked by another on date I had enquired about. She was shocked this happened and thought I had changed my mind.  I was devastated.  It’s for Christmas night and I can’t find another property in the area.  I believe Airbnb have somehow made a mistake. Is this possible and if so how do I contact them or should the host contact them? Thank you in advance.

@Debbie884  Both you and the host seem to be mistaken. What you sent was an Inquiry - not a binding request. Even if the host pre-approves it, that does not hold the dates on the calendar for you. So until the moment that you accept the pre-approval and commit to the booking, your chosen dates can still be booked by anyone else. When a binding Reservation Request is accepted or an Instant Book is placed that overlaps with your inquiry dates, your inquiry and the associated pre-approval are automatically canceled.

There is no point in contacting Airbnb about this. The mistake was yours, not theirs, and It's not like they're going to cancel someone else's confirmed booking because you had your eyes on it first. And your host is certainly not going to cancel that booking, because doing so will result in Airbnb charging them a penalty fine and blocking them from re-booking the dates. In the future, if you don't want to be disappointed like this again, use the "Reserve" button rather than "Contact Host." From that field, you enter your payment details and agree to the terms, and the dates are secured in the host's calendar unless they decline the booking.

@Anonymous with pre-approvals there used to be a box to tick if you wanted the dates to be blocked in favour of the inquiring guest. Has this feature been removed ?

@Marit-Anne0  If I remember correctly, that feature was removed some years back (perhaps a host who's received a recent inquiry can confirm that).  Anyway, blocking the dates in favor of one guest does not appear as an option in the Help Center article for hosts on Inquiries:  https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/2410/what-can-i-do-when-i-get-a-booking-inquiry

The last time I was active, the only prompt for blocking dates was the one that came up as an option when declining a request.
