Business registration

Hi there,  I am looking for advice on tax implications and regulations for hosting an Airbnb. Do I need a business registration for this? Also do you purchase your insurance through your own insurance or just the Airbnb insurance?

1. Check with your local government re STR regulations/local taxes

2. your accountant can advise you about personal taxes

3. you need your own home insurance for short term lets @Halal-and-Farsad0

Hi @Halal-and-Farsad0

Welcome to the Community Center! When did you start welcoming guests in your listing? 🙂

In addition to Helen's comprehensive advice, I wanted to share this article that you might find interesting as it gathers quite a lot of information on this topic as well: Responsible hosting in Canada

I hope this helps!

If you're hosting an Airbnb, the tax and registration requirements depend on your location. In the UK, you may need to register as a business if you earn above the tax-free allowance (£7,500 under the Rent-a-Room Scheme or £1,000 under the Property Allowance). It's best to check with HMRC or a tax advisor to understand your specific obligations.

For insurance, Airbnb provides Host Guarantee and Host Protection Insurance, but these may not cover everything. Many hosts get additional short-term rental insurance through their own provider to cover damages, liability, and loss of income. Checking with an insurance expert can help you choose the best option. Hope this helps!"
