Discounts

Anyone ever offer a discount because an amenity stopped working before you could fix it between guests?  The amenity is the tv in the bedroom.  The incoming guest is asking for a discount.

Did you tell him the TV was broken before check-in?

Yes - the information was shared as soon as we were informed by previous guest.  A TV is still available in the unit, just not in the bedroom.

Is the space shared or is it a whole house rental?  If the space is shared, and the TV in the bedroom was for the guest alone, then a discount would be called for.  If a whole house rental, and there is another TV in the living room (lounge) , then apologize to the guest but no discount is needed as they can still watch TV,  just not in bed.  How much of a discount is the guest asking for?  @Rose1610

Guest did not specify any amount just if one would be offered.  There is a TV in the living area that is working.

@Rose1610  Hi Rose! If there's any way of swapping out the TV (even bringing yours in) before the guest arrives I would do that and worry about repair later. We have given some money back when there have been issues during a stay--once a leak through the ceiling from the condo above, once a water main break in the area that meant there was no water overnight. In these cases we refunded them for one night and of course cleaned up the water damage right away.  We didn't wait for them to ask for a discount, and in the case of the ceiling leak we also brought up a bottle of wine.  M.E.

I completely understand if the issue would affect their basic needs such as hot water, ability to store cold food, etc.  It's just not clear to me if a TV is 'essential' or just expected.  I guess my bigger question was if I offer a discount or other monetary amount, what were suggestions on the worth of not having a TV in the bedroom.   Obviously this is very subjective....:)

Just offer to move the TV from the living room to bedroom if that's where their preference is for  watching TV and they don't want to use their laptops.

Personally I think the guests are being rather silly Asking  for a discount when there's another TV. If  you aren't too fussed about the income I would  be tempted to call their bluff and offer to ask Airbnb to cancel the booking if they feel having a TV in their bedroom is crucial to their stay 😁

Thanks for your input.  I did offer to move the tv from living room to bedroom but they wanted one in the living room too.  As it turns out, my co-host was able to figure out the sound issue before they arrived so it all worked out.  In the future,  I now have a better idea of how to handle these minor complaints with advice from other hosts like yourself.
