Anyone getting any bookings for May 1 onward? In particular if you're in a summer vacation hot spot?
I'm trying to figure out if I'm even gonna stay in business this summer. I'm near the beach. Last summer every single weekend was booked no problem.
I read a lot of papers, can t remember where sorry.

My take is..... there is no real data to back *less thriving* in hot temperatures.
Also, *less thriving* still doesn't mean safe. Not by a long shot.
@Jessica-and-Henry0 , the way i read it wasnt less thriving in any temp, but it was more contagious with every degree cooler. Regardless, it is incredibly contagious wherever the weather.
I have an awful feeling that Florida is going to demonstrate how well the virus may thrive in hot weather. And, as there's a resurgence already underway in China the world hasn't even come close to the apex of the curve.( spare a thought for India) I think it will take a vaccine to reboot the travel related industries. Remember how worried people were to host people coming from Wuhan? I'd now add anyone coming from the denial states until there's an effective vaccine that's been very widely distributed. These are tough times & it's going to take a long time to recover. If California doesn't have a major earthquake we can consider ourselves lucky! Ask Branka & Silvia. (And I'm going to shout out again for our state & local gov: Go Gavin, Go Libby, Go London, Go all the people staying in , staying smart, caring for their community XO Golden State!)
@Pete69 Right now, I'm not expecting to get any guests at all this year. Airbnb had already screwed us via the search placements so we had about 70% fewer bookings than we had any other year before the virus hit. This would be especially true since both Jersey City and New York City are hot spots for the disease. Even if the virus is contained in the next month, I'm not sure people will be traveling again to NYC at least until the late fall.
I imagine life will be very different once we're 'through this', and there will be lots of doubters who'll give busy areas/cities a very wide berth for a very long time. I don't expect a sniff until August (at the earliest).
The long term rentals will be affected negatively also. Many people think, that they can escape from STR to LTR without damage, but it's not realistic to believe, that they will succeed.
Hi @Pete69
in my country of origin, Ecuador, they are getting hit very hard and frankly it does not help the government is reporting incorrect data, I think reported deaths were about 140 Mark since reporting started (at least the last time I checked several days ago) and doctors working for some of our most prestigious hospitals are publicly saying this is the benchmark for deaths in one hospital only- sadly our government is lying and as are many others, I imagine.
If you look at Guayaquil, Ecuador - beautiful tropical weather all year round, the COVID-19 virus has been killing mercilessly. In parts this is due to the lack of follow through of shelter in place but you can see that hot weather is not a deterrent for this virus. It is so bad that there are no spaces at the morgues, and people are placing the bodies of their loved one on the streets. My country is poor and we have been hit hard and we get messages and videos of what our people are faced with and to say it is heartbreaking is an understatement. And until there is a vaccine, “herd immunisation” has been achieved and the economy has recovered (guessing 2-5 years time based on the last pandemic ~1918; La Gripa and previous market crashes), travel will not be as it was. Tourism is a “luxury” for many and unfortunately not a standard.
Honestly, I would wait for the storm to calm down a bit and rent long term to locals, with actual contracts and formalities in place but what you choose to do is up to you.
either way- stay safe! 🙂

Guayaquil, Ecuador: High 80's to 90. We'll see how coronavirus can handle the South western US's 90 - 108 degrees summers.
Many rumours are circulating around these days. The severity of coronavirus impact may be linked to national policies on BCG childhood vaccination. Some old researches (from the late 60-s) shows, that the BCG vaccine leads to a stronger immune answer against multiple respiratory viruses, as a side effect.
In Australia's major states the beaches are closed to all but local residents for short exercise periods. You must stay at home, you will get fined if you are out for anything other than exempted reasons. Holidays and even Easter family gatherings are NOT exempt.
BUT, our curve is flattening very well so it looks like these rules are working and just maybe we will be able to relax the rules.
I expect the borders will stay closed until the whole world is in a better place - and unfortunately a huge part of our STR is to overseas guests.
It is what it is and I am using the time to refresh - just finished painting the lounge.
@Pete69 I've closed off my calendar for the summer. How do you host safely? Allow 72 hours for cleaning before and after bookings (as the virus can live on surfaces for up to 3 days)? I don't see getting out from under a shutdown safely, (unless there is a vaccine) without widespread testing, surveillance and antibody testing to see if someone is immune. What is someone gets sick during their stay. Do they quarantine at your airbnb - likely without paying? What if someone dies in your home?
If you're in New York City then I can understand shutting down for the year.
I'm along the California coast. I've decided that if I don't get a couple of bookings from mid May (when I open up for the season) until June 31st, then I close down for the year. Not worth paying the extra $65 per month that I pay for insurance, $5 a month for Ooma phone service and the new $89 Los Angeles city fee that's due June 1st. I'll have a pretty good idea what demand is like by looking at a couple of my competitor's calendars. So far their dates are completely empty, although LA is locked down until mid May.
I ain't worried about COVID-18. I think I may have already had that thing. Waiting to get an anti-body test when they become available.
no fresh bookings
