license in Florida

license in Florida

I'm currently in the process of obtaining my short-term rental (STR) license in Plantation, and I've run into a bit of a roadblock that I'm hoping you can help me with.

The city is requesting a copy of my third-party vendor's certificate of registration with the Florida Department of Revenue, as they are asking if taxes are being collected on platforms like Airbnb. However, when I reached out to Airbnb support, an agent informed me that they don't provide hosts with this certificate of registration.

I'm stuck at this point and not sure how to proceed. Have you encountered this issue before? If so, how did you manage to get the necessary documentation or resolve this situation? Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, Andrea. Yes, the licensing and taxing can be very confusing. I wrote a tutorial for Florida hosts which might be helpful :  https://community.withairbnb.com/t5/Community-Guides/Florida-Sales-Tax-Tutorial-Revised-April-2024/m...

You do need a license from the State but if you are only using Airbnb, you are not required to file your taxes with the DOR because Airbnb collects and remits the tax on your behalf. Not all platforms do, so you may be required to submit a report monthly to the DOR if you use other platforms. Then, you will also need a county license, but your county allows Airbnb to collect and submit its Tourist Bed Tax for you. See: https://www.airbnb.ca/help/article/2301

After you read the tutorial, if you have additional questions, please feel free to ask me.

Good luck, Karen
