Guest wet the bed

We’ve recently had a slightly tumultuous few weeks hosting our two rooms within our home (contractors coming back drunk every night in the early hours).  The most recent guest, whom we’ve hosted before, went out on Saturday night, came back very drunk, and on checking his room the next morning I found his bed soaked through.  Nothing was said, he just threw the window open in the hope that it would dry and I wouldn’t notice.

Yes i I know I should have put waterproof mattress protectors on the beds, but to be honest, I didn’t expect guests to wet the bed! I had two protectors on which is usually sufficient, but this was clearly a full bladder of urine and the protectors were soaked as was the nearly new mattress. I immediately stripped the bed and put the bedding on a hot wash. The mattress I sprayed with white vinegar and sprinkled with bicarbonate of soda.

The guest claimed it was a spilt bottle of water but the staining is yellow, (have taken photos) but has since offered to pay for the damage.  I’ve asked for quotes for professional mattress cleaning but all three companies have stated that they can only clean the mattress surface, and the urine would have got inside the mattress.  With this in mind, I think I need to replace the mattress as it’s not fair to expect other guests to sleep on a mattress that’s been peed on.

Can anyone offer any advice here? I hate wasting a nearly new and previously pristine mattress, but I wouldn’t want to sleep on it!

It should frankly be a rule that any ABB/hotel/shared bed situation MUST have waterproof covers: mine have first a full-zippered encasement, then also a waterproof topper, after that comes the fluffly mattress pads, then the sheet.

Find out what a new mattress will cost. Maybe the guest will split it with you.
