Host asking for actual passport for entire week - Split, Croatia

Hey, this is my first time using Airbnb and the host has asked for one of our group's passports to keep over the week as a sort of deposit, she has also stated that if this cannot happen, a 500 euro deposit will have to be paid instead, is this normal? Also she conveniently said that she has started doing this since last year, and also only mentioned it after I had accepted the offer.
