Hello! I'm a host since two months and it's going better than I expected. In my town I can earn £4000 without paying the taxes but at the moment I have booked my room for the next two months. I wanted to ask how is going to be - I'll have to declare the amount in my council and then pay or it's all automatically and I'll be charged on airbnb website!? Thank you for any advice! Anna
You will file a self assessment form where you declare all the income, then select the 'rent a room exemption'. Whatever is earned over the exemption amount will be subject to whatever your usual income tax rate is and you will be sent a bill by HMRC.
Hi - in the UK the limit is rising to £7500 for earnings including letting a room in your home from 6 April 2016 - if you currently complete a tax return (self assessment) then as long as you are under £7500 you do not need to declare it.
