Payment charged in incorrect currency

Hi there,

I have a reservation for a 207 night stay for a property in Australia. I am also located in Australia and I have set up the payemnts to be made by my Australian credit card. Air Bnb have taken the first payment out and while the receipt shows it was withdrawn in AUD my credit card statement shows it was withdrawn in Great British Pounds. 

I have spoken to Air Bnb and been told this is a bank error however our personal banker has advised it is a "merchant" (airbnb) error as only thr merchant can dictate what currency the payment is taken in. Air Bnb have been very unhelpful on the three occasions I have spoken to them. This is a $30,000 booking the Foreign Exchage fees we are being charged by the bank are astronomical and at this point we are considering cancelling as it is just not worth it to pay so much extra. 

Has this happened to anyone else? How do we resolve the issue?
