Hello! My name's Michelle and I'm an Airbnb host in Brooklyn.
I'm also a curator working at MoMA in the architecture and design department. I was one of the curators of the current collection exhibition focused on the 1960s.
I have been leading free tours of the exhibition on Fridays for fellow Airbnb hosts and guests through the exhibition to introduce them to some of the great art, architecture, and design works on display (which include everything from Andy Warhol to an E-type Jaguar to psychedelic posters to pictures from the moon landings).
In exchange for a tour and no queuing to get in, I spend five minutes (no more, hand on heart) telling attendees about how my husband and I use Airbnb to support two non-profits of our choice: 1) Breaking Ground which works with low income and homeless families in NYC and 2) the ACLU, specifically as we want to support the work they do with #BLM. I show people using a handout I have uploaded here how easy it is to route a small percentage of your payments straight to great causes that promote neighborliness, warmth, and social justice.
I'm curious as to a) how many people are open to actually implementing this model and b) if hosts would continue to be interested in art tours (and even architecture and design tours outside of the museum--I am an architectural historian by training) in exchange for hearing more and possibly signing up.
Did anyone from the first two tours I led implement the model themselves, for these charities or for others of their choice? Do other hosts already donate in this way? I'd love to hear more from those interested in this topic.
Warmly,
Michelle
