Discounts and custom pricing

I'm unclear as to how the final booking price is calculated when you have custom monthly and weekly pricing, discounts for both weekly and monthly bookings AND Smart pricing turned ON. It seems to get very complicated, and I ended up with a recent booking coming in at way below what I expected (and way below my Base Rate). So, is it better just to build the discount into the weekly and monthly prices, and turn off discounts? And does smart pricing actually work? They have some really WEIRD ideas on how to price my house!
