Guest used wrong product in dishwasher, harsh chemical, maybe I can fix, maybe not. now what?

So, despite that we had 2 other containers clearly labeled "dishwasher detergent" in the same cabinet, our recent guests used the "porta-pak" chemical toilet pods in our dishwasher. (we own a camper with an rv toilet, and this is where we keep all cleaning supplies and the like). The porta pak chemical toilet pods are in their original container which clearly states its intended use.

We came home to a dishwasher full of dirty dishes and a "porta pak" in the soap dispenser. We vaccumed it out (it had already broken open) But unfortunately they must have done a load or two already with this chemical. Not only are all plates, pots and even wooden spoons! now reeking of porta-potty chemical smell, but our dishwasher does too. We've been running it empty all day long, sometimes on wash sometimes on rinse only and we can't get the smell out. THe whole house reeks when it runs.

So what now? Do I contact the guest and just let them know what happened? keep rinsing and hoping?  Do I go right to requesting damage $ from guest and Airbnb? I honestly can't understand how they could have made this mistake. I'm too nice. I dont want to have to request $ or replace my dishwasher, but geez.

You certainly did a nice job updating the RV.  However, two of your 5 reviews reflect that the guests were proably unfamiliar with staying in an RV, along with the summer bug fest.  Do you orient your guests personally or is it a self check in situation?    I would suggest you remove anything not relevant to the guest experience and not use the camper a storage.

As to a damage claim, I am pretty sure you will not be reimbursed for the guest error.  I would not know to not use dishwasher pods unless specifically instructed verbally by the host because I am one of those somewhat dense city dwellers 😛

I am afraid this might be an expensive lesson, but if you do decide to pursue a claim, you first must contact the guest first.  Good luck!

@Jennifer1944

Besides some strong smell, is there any damage to the dishwasher ?

There are a lot of tips on the Internet to get strong smell out of a dishwasher, google it.

Next time be sure guest are instructed well about the difference between toilet pods and dishwater detergent !

Best regards,

@Jennifer1944   Love your camper!! Too cute!

I'd just keep trying to run it and use different dishwasher detergents to get the smell out. I can see how annoying that would be! Also for the dishes/pots you can try soaking them in cold water with some bleach, then rinse in soapy hot water after! That might take the smell out.

Good luck! 🙂
