Taxes - of course!

Hey guys.  I have considered my occupancy tax to be included in the price of my rental.  My accountant says that unless this is specifically stated at the time of rental and collected up front, that this cannot be considered true, and the taxes have to be considered to be uncollected.  Meaning, of course, that I then have to pay tax on the amount collected, rather than on the amount before taxes are added.  I do not see any way to specify in my "pricing" options to include my local occupancy tax (as is possible case on "other" rental sites).  How are others handling this?

It depends if Airbnb is allowed by your city/state to collect taxes on your behalf. Some cities just don't allow it. Contact Airbnb and ask them.

@Adam12 @Evelyn0, I pay the Transient Occupancy Taxes out of the income I receive.  Right or wrong, I deduct it as an expense the same way I deduct the Airbnb 3% fee.   I would think that if Airbnb collects and pays the local tax on your behalf, you would not be able to claim it as a deduction since you did not receive nor pay it. Disclosure:  I'm not a tax expert, just an ordinary gal doing her taxes on Turbo Tax.  🙂
