when the guest books my place, what are the things that they are being charged and when would they be charged?

The guest is charged at time of booking (or must make payment within 24 hours, depending on the payment method).They are charged for everything which is related to the booking (see your booking form),  like the rent, the cleaning fee (if any),  the Airbnb guest service fee and taxes (if any). You can simulate a booking on your own listing to see all details.

Airbnb does not collect the deposit, it is only a security deposit,  to be accessed when claims show up:
