We allow pets but make it clear in house rules they are absolutely not allowed in the pool area, which by default means not in the pool!
We also state that there are cameras covering the backyard and outside entry for both guest safety as well as ours, and that if this is an issue, it is not the property for them.
Our recent guests brought their dog in the pool, to which i haven’t established if any damages yet (they check out today). I’ve informed them I’m aware and that it must not happen again and it is against house rules.
previous to this the guests were difficult and started acting like we were a hotel and they on an all expenses paid vacay. I admit that items such as milk and a full evening worth of firewood were missing, and this was rectified immediately, however…the requests kept coming. More toilet paper because the 4 rolls for 4 people had been completely used on day 1. Paper towels (not included, I suspect this is where all the toilet paper was used). Tea pot (not included). Tea and olive oil (consumed and expected more). More fire wood (we state enough for 1 night provided, an entire bag was burned in 1 day and then they expected more - even though we state only 1 night worth is provided). Pool wasn’t warm enough (we state it’s at 27 and it will not be turned up as this is standard for outdoor heated pool and anything higher poses health hazard).
My issue is that we say we provide enough to get you settled, however these guests expected full service the entire stay, and called my housekeeper 3x to ask for these things. i had to finally tell them that the housekeeper was only for an emergency and that we aren’t a hotel. We were overseas and this is why the housekeeper number had been provided.
I feel I need to leave an honest review to inform future hosts. however I am frustrated that their review will impact my rating. In this circumstance I feel these guests have completely taken the piss and to be penalised for it feels unreasonable. Furthermore the dog in the pool might have financial impacts not known yet as a small tear won’t be realised for weeks and our pool cleaners might charge us more depending on what happens next clean.
what would other hosts do in this situation?
Sorry to hear about this, @Sylvie1416, it sounds like a stressful time. How have things been since they checked out? I had a look through your reviews and your other guests all seem delighted with your listings!
We just had a guest leave a lower review because our house allows dogs, but not in the pool. First, according to North Carolina state law you must post a no pets or glass containers in pool, as well as “warning no lifeguard on duty.” Second, depending on the type of dog we have had to shut down the pool for a filter change because of all the pet hair. This is an inconvenience to our next guest.
is there anything I can do to protest the lower rating?
You shouldn't get ANY ratings at all!!
I wonder WHY you do the airbnb at all???
I asked my husband he's an expert on pools, apart from the dangers for the dog and dog hairs, the chemicals chlorine are not good for the dog,
I f there is no steps out of the pool then how does the dog get out? The could panic and have a fit,
Now you have to put another sign "No Dogs in the Pool"
We have the sign, but she said that my listing is inaccurate because I didn’t specify that dogs are not allowed in the pool. Well, I didn’t say that there was no lifeguard on duty in the listing either. They are both clearly posted in the pool area. I’m just upset because it lowered my rating and I really try to do my best.
@MorgansSunrise0 yes it's quite ridiculous for anyone to think that their dog is allowed in a pool! Apart from what @Sudsrung0 pointed out (chlorine is no good for dogs, humans too if we're being realistic about it), there are too many variables, not to mention a wet dog! i'm going to have to add this to our own pool rules *sigh*.
@Sudsrung0 lol, we can always make another rule, haha. My daughter was just saying today how we need a sign saying "please put the pool toys away". We provide a great selection of pool toys, but sadly most parents don't bother to put them back.... so, another rule! And we are going to buy some nice plastic drinking cups and put up a rule about no glass. I'm going to get a corflute sign printed so it looks very official!
We had a guest drop a bottle of wine in the pool, it smashed on the bottom, wonderful
@Sudsrung0 It's strange how wine bottles can seem so resilient and at the same time so fragile. I've dropped multiple without breaking (I can be a bit clumsy) but when I accidentally, and quite softly as well, bumped one against a metal fence the bottom came right off. 🤔
@Sybe haha, i've dropped many as well! luckily never had anything like that happen, although I've spilled my fair share of wine!
@Sudsrung0 that's quite a feat of physics. I'm actually less concerned about wine/beer bottles as they tend to break better, although i'm still banning all glass.
I personally would never book an airbnb if it had a pool, was pet friendly, and the rules said the dog isn’t allowed in the pool. It makes it stressful for the dog owner to keep their dog out of the pool and if they keep jumping in, you have to keep the dog locked away which defeats the purpose of bringing them. I know I’d never be able to stop my dogs from jumping in and it would become stressful.
My biggest issue with this is don’t allow it to be pet friendly if the pets aren’t allowed in the pool. It’s stressful and hard for people to constantly keep their dogs out of the pool and if the dog keeps jumping in, they have to be locked in the house away from everyone else which defeats the purpose of bringing a pet. I personally X out of any Airbnb w a pool that is dog friendly where in the rules it states the dog isn’t allowed in the pool.
