Hi @Nadia1040. Thanks @Bhumika for the tag…
@Laurelle3 & @Helen744 are correct in their commentary, and you can’t go wrong making contact with Laurelle.
All Australian states and territories have their own regulations that are specific and their compliance (law) requirements differ depending on the use of a building. Commercial etc. That would include undertaking drills, inspections and the provision and maintenance of PPE. Fire PPE such as fire evacuation maps, fire hoses, fire blankets, fire extinguishers, sprinklers, exits, commercial exit lights and their maintenance log books etc etc.
However, I digress.
Some things to have and I DON’T know your laws.
Fire evacuation maps. If a complex, then these are probably in corridors to apartments.
Otherwise if a stand alone building you can usually make a floor plan or have some already. Scan. Photocopy. Remove (correction fluid or electronically) unnecessary information. Use a free App to add information.
- You are here marked on map. The floor plan/ map must be correctly oriented for the room and the “You are here” location.
- the direction to take/location of evacuation routes to the muster area. If none is designated, think about your personal property and create one. Include the location of fire extinguishers, blankets etc on the maps. You can also include some general instructions that can be laminated, and in situ.
I would have a fire blanket on your barbecue. Can be on a hook hanging or somewhere nearby. Is your kitchen near the same balcony as well? Noting your stove. Fire extinguisher/s. Note, if you don’t know how to use one, understand how to use one:PASS. Depending on its size, a fire extinguisher can only cover a small waste paper bin sized fire.
Always have hoses connected to outside taps.
Have a safety card with emergency information and the address! Guests will not know the address in an emergency!
I have a fire blanket exclusively at the barbecue. A separate fire extinguisher and blanket easily accessible to the whole area. Smoke detectors. A safety card and all equipment is regularly checked.
Hi @Nadia1040 , Welcome to the Community Center!
If you are still looking for some advice on this matter, I am reaching out to our members from Australia @Helen744 @Robin4 @Laurelle3 @Cathie19 if they have any advice for you on this matter.
@Nadia1040 if you look at your previous post on this page "New Host to the Community " I have put a copy the NSW Government internet page.
I also sent you a message to you via Airbnb and I have put my phone number with letters in it. You can ring me and I will try to help.
You can also ring the NSW Government there is a phone number on the STRA information site.
There is also companies on the internet that advertise that they can produce them for a fee.
As @Helen744 has said you need a fire alarm which would be in your property plans for your building complex. If your garage is connected (same common wall connected) to your apartment you have to have a heat alarm connected from garage to the unit fitted by an electrician
You need a fire extinguisher size which you can buy at Bunnings and fix to wall. The same as a fire blanket fitted to wall.
Fire exit plans drawn and fitted to the bedroom doors and living area for exit doors.
You need an emergency folder with
*Emergency contact numbers 000 for all our emergencies services police, ambulance and fire.
*what information to give as in direction to where you are. who is affected (I put this all in the information that I sent to you in the private message via Airbnb.
* Hospital nearest to your address. Same as for Chemist and Doctor that they can go to.
You have to remember that you may have guests that don't live in Australia or speak another language. It has to be simple precise, and that they could use in an Emergency.
You can send me a message through Airbnb.
Hope this will help you.
Laurelle
Oh my God @Laurelle3 you are amazing!!!
@Nadia1040 if you need any help in how to look at the direct messages or responding to Laurelle, do let me know. I will be more than happy to bridge the communication for you both😄.
Hello laurelle
thank you to take time for answering this clearly.
i will try to find your text and call you
thanks again
@Nadia1040 Sorry Nadia I am not too sure what that is . We do not have that type of legislation in Victoria . We must have standard smoke detectors and many people have an extinguisher but thats as far as it goes. It sounds like it applies only to NSW, maybe a New South Welshman could be more helpful... .. Welcome to the Community Centre ... H
Thank you so much @Helen744 for chiming in and responding to @Nadia1040 ! Truly appreciate you taking some time to share your thoughts about it.😄
Thank you Bhumika
Thank you Helen

@Cathie19 I like your sample card I had sent @Nadia1040 privately a copy of most pages in my Emergency Folder which had RACE and how to use the Fire Extinguisher.
@Cathie19 I like your idea of Fire Blanket near the Barbeque.
Where we live, we have to have what to do for Bushfire, Flooding Roads, Storms and Electrical Blackouts and Electrical wires Down. Because we live near the Beach, we have to have a Tsunami warnings and what to do or contact.
As you said @Cathie19 we have to be prepared.
Totally get it @Laurelle3!
Technically you should have a safe operating procedure:SOP or safe work instruction: SWI for things like barbecues. OR leave the operational menu or a copy near dangerous equipment. Mine is in the back of the welcome folder.
I also advise on sun exposure, hydration and dehydration symptoms.
I have severe/serious storm warning and lightening information including the 30:30 rule, in my folder. Especially as we are the lightning capital of Australia during storm season.
Bushfires are not so much an issue here, but smoke from cool burn offs can be.
Gosh even berries from the Carpentaria palm trees can be caustic so they’re included in safety stuff in the folder in house rules for parents.
But also include Croc safety 🐊🐊😁😁
However, I drag out my cyclone management plan during cyclone season, which is a personalised property and Darwin specific document. We will encourage non residents to leave Darwin during such a rare event, but will assist if unable to leave. We do not encourage storm chasers. If you want to stay during a declared cyclone having an imminent hit on Darwin, you’ve got to follow our directions or you will be asked to leave and attend a public shelter for everyone’s safety. It’s very comprehensive…
We actually have in print that we commandeer the second bedroom for property use, if a cyclone is considered serious enough to take the strongest cover. That room is the property’s cyclone shelter.
We list survival supplies for guests to be responsible for, separately from what we do on the property.
@Laurelle3 @Nadia1040 The card is laminated on the fridge so it can be grabbed and carried in an emergency.
Thank you Laurelle
