Aloha, I'm Bob, I'm a new host with a condo in Kihei, HI on the Hawaiian island of Maui. I have just had two guests stay in my condo this month, and this is the beginning of my hosting experiences. So far, so good! I'm enjoying this new experience of how to manage a short term rental. I've been watching several Airbnb videos on how to become a superhost, which is my goal. The previous owner has been hosting this unit on Airbnb for 5 years and has been very successful with mostly 5.0 ratings. I'm trying to follow in her footsteps. She has been extremely helpful in helping me to get started. I may be reaching out to you all on this board with newbie questions. I look forward to participating in this community.

In your situation if the guest is continuing to smoke indoors against your house rules and after being asked to stop. I would ask Aurbnb to cancel the booking.
it is your property they don't get to dictate when they do and don't smoke at the property . They are behaving outrageously.

Hello, I'm from Kenya and also quite new to hosting. Quite nervous to start hosting/seen alot of horror stories. Wondering what are some of your best stories with guests? and how do you deal with the slower parts of the year?
@Julie4405 Keep in mind that not many hosts come to hosting forums to say how wonderful all their guests have been- people post when they have an issue they want help with or to vent. So it can appear that hosts have no end of horror scenarios with guests.
As a home-share host, I have never had a bad guest I wouldn't want to host again, never had any reason to contact Airbnb to deal with some issue regarding a guest. There were a couple of times a guest did something not okay, but nothing that I couldn't address amicably with the guest at the time.
Honestly most of my guests have been delightful people who it was a pleasure to have around. Some have cooked great meals which they invited me to share, brought or left me little gifts, expressed appreciation for hosting them, and left their room and bathroom clean and tidy. We've had great conversations and laughs over coffee or a bottle of wine.
There's a few guests I still keep in touch with.
Also there are some types of listings which are more prone to experience bad scenarios than others. An entire home with a max guest count of 12, that looks like a party magnet, with a pool, hottub, etc., and an off-site host, is more likely to attract problem guests than a cottage for 2 on the property where the host also lives.
So those horror-show scenarios should be taken not fearfully, but as good warning and knowledge of what can happen, and how hosts might avoid those issues.
It's like crossing the street- a billion people do so safely every day- but if you don't look both ways for traffic before stepping off the curb, you might get hit.
Hi @Sarah977 that makes sense about the forums since it's a great/quick place to find solutions to problems. You're stories offer a different perspective and they've helped calm down my anxieties about sharing my house with a stranger. I actually booked a guest around the same time you replied and I am having a similar experience. They have been kind and respectful throughout their stay. Though it's like you said it's good to have knowledge of what could go wrong so you can be prepared.

@Julie4405 Thank you. Your listing looks lovely as well. I hope you continue to get great guests. Being a hands-on host helps tremendously. It seems to be mostly the places that have off-site hosts where the guests have self-check-in and may never even meet or talk to their guests during a stay unless the guests have complaints, that experience the majority of serious issues.
Brand new host - I think everything is ready and it says "active" but when we try to find our own listing, we cannot find it. Is there a time delay or something? Any suggestions?

@Robyn414 Yes, it takes about 24 hrs for a listing to go live. It isn't instantaneous.
