Having just finished my third year on the Host Advisory Board, I still reflect on how it was even possible that I was selected out of hundreds of thousands of amazing hosts in Canada.
The clarity came in time. In Canada, we care about our environment, we are passionate about species at risk, water quality, quality of life, strong relationships with Indigenous people, offering a diverse and safe culture, and remembering and honouring our history. We are a sustainable country, making decisions and keeping in mind what may be best for our children’s children. It all came together as to why I was chosen. I am the holder of a BCORP accreditation in how I host on Airbnb. Sustainability means everything to us and it matters to our guests and the travelling public.
It took one phone call to gather many Canadians together to talk, and workshop out over 70 individual actions that a host can take to be a more sustainable host. To really represent Canadian culture, and now in Canada we have our very own website called Sustainablehosting.ca, hosted by Green Step in British Columbia that any host can access. Huge huge shout out to Claudia from Lake Como, Italy, for guiding us with your Love Sustainability site. This was my calling, and this was accomplished and will be available for all hosts sponsored by Airbnb! Way to go Canada, and thank you for the opportunity to represent.
Being on the host advisory board allowed me to get to know people behind the scenes at Airbnb, who work every day to shape our hosting experience. I am so happy to have been on the advisory board for three years and I know that having the opportunity to help inform decisions that are best for my country was a great service that I was able to provide to my fellow hosts
I don’t think there’s any other company that puts so much effort into making sure that the host has a voice in key decisions. The host advisory board is one way that Airbnb uses, but there’s also workshops and community meet ups and opportunities for anybody to get involved.
As I reflect, the Host Advisory Board plays a key role in representing the opinions, concerns, the motivations, the unique situations that Canadians have faced. Whether that be in a natural disaster, a product change, a change in regulation we worked together with Airbnb to help develop solutions. Be it the forest fires of the Shuswap, the huge snow falls in Fernie, the regulations in Alberta, or the changes with registration in Quebec or Toronto, my fellow Canadians had a voice at the table.
One key reflection for me are the relationships we form in key areas of our work. For example, Felicity has become a dear close friend as a result of the Host Advisory Board. Together we have encouraged hosts worldwide to participate in Earth Day cleanups. Canadians, the Aussies, and for sure Thailand ... you delivered. We speak at least once a week, if not once a day. We know each other's families. We care about each other, and that partnership has helped us to share ideas as we strive to serve Airbnb. Ideas from down under to up here in the north have helped us advocate for sustainable hosting. Check out our articles at the Festival of Sustainability here and here. This was a Host Advisory Board Project that Felicity and I took on and we are so proud of all of you. We are excited to support the new voices at the Host Advisory Board in the coming years, and we will be cheering from the sidelines.
Being on the Host Advisory Board has provided me with global insights and global opportunities. Be it travel, awareness of droughts in Kenya, the Olympics in Paris, the sustainable work in Italy, and the amazing commitment to sustainability in Bali Indonesia, this position has allowed me to really understand and take in that this is a global community.
This has been an amazing three years, and while in some ways I wish it would not end, stronger is my opinion that the next Canadian member of the Host Advisory Board will shine and showcase their strength and commitment to Canada, and I am excited to see. Come and meet the key individuals at Airbnb on a weekly basis to see product development, share whether these ideas will work in our country, and get to know some truly amazing Airbnb employees. It is about our world.
Shout out to Tori, Hania, James, Amanda, Michelle, Cierra, Catherine Powell, and, of course, Brian (yes, we are on a first name basis).
Thank you to Airbnb for the 30+ friends, and dear friends from Tenerife, to Atlanta to Kenya or Tokyo. You are all in my heart forever.
