[Celebrations] New Beginnings: My Journey as a London Airbnb Community Leader

As 2024 comes to a close, Airbnb’s Week of Celebration has given me the perfect opportunity to reflect on the whirlwind few weeks since I became a Community Leader and Co-Host for London. These new roles have been nothing short of inspiring, offering me the chance to connect with fellow hosts, onboard new members of our community, share my hosting journey, and participate in events that celebrate the incredible impact of hosting on our lives and local neighbourhoods. Though my journey as a Community Leader has only just begun, it’s already been deeply rewarding. I’m excited to share my story with you and reflect on what hosting has meant to me.

My Hosting Journey

Over six years ago, I began hosting in Wandsworth, London, simply looking to make good use of an extra room. Little did I know, this decision would open the door to something so much more. Hosting became a way to connect with people from all walks of life—each with their own fascinating stories. From medics to bodybuilders, my guests have shared insights that have enriched my life and broadened my perspective.

For me, hosting is about creating a warm and welcoming space where people feel at home, no matter how far they’ve travelled. Over time, I realised that hosting isn’t just a personal endeavour—it’s part of a global community of passionate and resourceful individuals who care deeply about offering unique experiences and fostering meaningful connections. When the opportunity to become a Community Leader arose, I knew it was my chance to give back. Supporting fellow hosts, learning from their experiences, and amplifying the sense of connection that makes Airbnb so special felt like a natural next step. It’s also provided me with a new purpose—an exciting challenge that keeps me energised and engaged every day.

Stepping into the Role

Even in these early days, I’ve already seen the profound ways in which Airbnb hosting can change lives and bring people together. One of my first experiences as a Community Leader was presenting at the Waltham Forest Event, where I met a talented and enthusiastic group of hosts. Sharing my story and hearing theirs was both humbling and inspiring. Several attendees approached me to discuss their challenges in providing the right guest experience, and I felt a real sense of purpose in offering guidance. Moments like these reminded me how much knowledge we gain through hosting and how rewarding it is to share those insights. Problem-solving is something I naturally enjoy, and this event reaffirmed how valuable collaboration is within our community.

Last week, I attended A Celebration of UK Tourism, hosted in partnership with Airbnb’s Policy Teams and English Heritage. Held at Jewel London—a true hidden gem—it was a standout moment in my journey so far. Listening to Amanda Cupples, Airbnb’s Northern Europe General Manager, speak about the impact of hosting on the UK’s tourism industry was eye-opening. I was honoured to share my perspective alongside others in the room. Events like these remind me why I embraced this role: to celebrate the positive influence of hosting and help strengthen the bonds within our community.

Looking Ahead

Although I’m just beginning my journey as a Community Leader, I’m excited for what lies ahead. Planning my first events for London hosts in 2025 is already underway, and I can’t wait to bring our community together in new and meaningful ways. My goal is to support both new and experienced hosts while ensuring that hosting continues to be a positive and rewarding experience for all.

The Week of Celebration has been the perfect way to end the year. It’s given me time to reflect on our collective accomplishments, share stories with fellow hosts, and look ahead to the possibilities of the new year. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a vibrant and supportive community, inspired every day by the creativity and resilience of the people I’ve met.

Here’s to a new year filled with connection, collaboration, and unforgettable guest experiences. Let’s continue to build this amazing community together!

Hi @Matthew2278

Can you help raise an issue with Airbnb that has been concerning hosts for a number of years .

We have tried to raise it through this community with no response sadly.

this is the issue.

a couple of years ago contrary to its published policy Airbnb has decided to automatically suspend a hosts listings when a guest raises a 'safety complaint'.

often this happens when a host raises issues with guests bringing in visitors not on the booking or tries to evict a guest for partying .

when the guest complains about the to airbnb about the host flagging the issue Airbnb then suspends a hosts listing without giving the host an opportunity to explain the situation Nor do they review messaging between host and guest .

the first a host knows about this often is when they find their up and coming bookings cancelled .

Airbnb refuses to explain to the host why they have been suspended or give the host an opportunity to share their side of the story .

not only is this against Airbnb's T&C's but is highly unfair to hosts who in the vast majority of cases have done nothing wrong but it is also leading to hosts leaving the platform.

can you raise this with the Uk community manager please @Matthew2278
