Does anybody have any explanation for it? Why would anybody waste their time like this? What could be in for them?

Just report him to Airbnb.

Yes sure, we immediately did. Just whyyyyy 😄
Simple @Richard1867 it's a well know scam a) to get you to agree a booking outside of airbnb b) they want to ask you something that will break your house rules c) another type of con.
Have a look at Airbnb Help and have a look at their guidance on common scams.
@Richard1867 This is clearly a scam. Do not respond to them directly. Notify Airbnb report scammer profile. Block them. Done!
This seems more sinister than just wanting to pay off-platform. It smacks of a bigger con to me. In any event, don’t answer, and report it.
I experience the same problem. From 5 different "quests" so far
Is it me, or we just get those "Fake Guest" requests lately. Our listing is a Long-Term only room (28 days or more) and my policy is Long-Term... If they book, they have to pay the first month de-facto. Now, they're asking for a reimbursement outside of AirBnB (which I flagged to Airbnb right away), but now, Airbnb wants me to give money back, but I never got any payment anyways.... I think they used a stolen/fake credit card and wants money back before their transaction is declined. Anyone else has those issues?
