Host Requested Early Checkout Morning Of

I was hoping for some guidance for how to approach this situation. I booked a studio with a stated checkout time of 1pm. The last day of the rental comes, and at almost 10am the host writes me on airbnb that I need to be out by 10am so that they can clean for another guest. I later talked to the host as I'm trying to pack up, and the host suggested we'd "had a conversation about this" after I suggested they update their checkout time on airbnb. Personally, I have no recollection of this and it certainly wasn't done through Airbnb, regardless this conversation would've taken place almost two weeks ago, if at all. I'm unsure if I ought to ask for compensation or how to approach this. The host was generally very nice and an early checkout isn't a huge deal. I had already made plans expecting a 1pm checkout.

@Ellis59

Updating the check-out time in a listing does not affect existing reservations.

So the host is at fault, not providing you what you are promised and paid for.

Not being a big deal, but big enough to mention it in the review, especially as it was communicated to you last minute.

@Ellis59  If a host has an exceptional need to have a different checkout time than what's displayed in the listing at the time of booking (which should appear in your email confirmation), they should make sure the guest agrees to this before accepting the booking. There could have been a simple misunderstanding - hosts juggling a lot of bookings often get their correspondences mixed up - so I would probably save any comment on this for the private feedback. Maybe the rating on Communication would not be a perfect 5.

Asking for compensation over a minor inconvenience is something I'd never recommend. It would likely offend the host, and result in a review that poisons your profile to future hosts.

@Ellis59  1 pm is a really late check-out time so it seems odd that the host would have had this on their listing, unless they are a new host and just didn't have their settings correct.

While it was inconvenient for you because you'd planned on 1pm, as you say it wasn't a huge deal. I am of the view that in order for Airbnb to work well, both hosts and guests need to cut each other a bit of slack, as none of us is perfect, and we all sometimes make errors.

It would have been better if the host had conveyed this to you the previous afternoon, rather than last minute, for sure.

If you and the host communicated about this before, as he/she seems to think, that should be available to see on your Airbnb message stream. That's why it's best to keep communication on the platform, rather than phone calls or texts.

As for compensation, no. Every little inconvenience isn't a matter of addressing it with money, and I'm sure if a host tried to charge you extra for some small detail, you wouldn't like that.

Plus, 10 or 11 am really is a normal check-out time for most listings.
